Actually, the older images of Alexander have short hair with waves and curls. Only after you hit the Renaissance do you begin to get the longer hair. And as I looked the images, the farther away from Alexander,s time you get, the longer his hair gets. Also, the longer hair Alexander seems to be a european image as the few middle eastern and asiatic images have shorter hair. I would expect that a soldier on campaign, as Alexander was constantly, would be more apt to keep his hair no longer than could be covered by his helmet. Doing so would insure that it would not get in the way during battle.
