malfunction
I recently made a scenerio for Civ 2 Multiplayer Gold Edition but when I try to play it a dialogue box comes up that says
"this program has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated". when I click on details, I get this

CIV2 caused an exception 03H in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff768a1.

When I start up the scenerio it sometimes crashes and says something about "D:\Ss\Smeds32\port.cpp
the thing is, I don't have a D drive! my cd drive is R. I would really appreciate it if someone could respond and tell me what the hell is going on! I have the latest patch for MGE also! This is not the first time that its happened, but I really want to find out what it is.

I already have numerous folders for all of my scenerios. 110 exactly, all in my scenerios folder of Civ 2 MGE. I am running Windows 98. I was browsing throught the "find" option in windows however and checked out my scenerio. Apparently, I have 2 sets of rules.txt and 2 sets of a file called rules.bak. I immediatly jumped to the conclusion that one rules text was different from the other, causing the game to malfunction and crash. However on closer inspection, the rules texts were very similar. I deleted the older one promptly thinking that my worries were over. Of course, they weren't. All of my units went back to the origional defaults as well as terrain etc. because of the rules text. But, the game did not crash. This has left me to the conclusion that the error is somewhere in my rules text. One rules text is also a hidden file. But, with only one, it goes back to the defaults. I also downloaded the MGE 1.3 patch in hope of correcting this, it did little. need urgent help!

I, too, run windows98
I've occasionally had a similar problem, but have not found a real workaround. Usually rebooting the machine has been enough for me. If the default civ files (with all of your custom ones absent from the directory) still result in a bomb, reinstall. Otherwise, I suspect you'll need to find some minor typo causing your problem. I hope someone else can offer more help...

I've tried reinstalling and rebooting, nothing seems to work. Perhaps it is a small error in the rules text, I had an idea the other day to completly redo the mod and see what happens. Thank you for your response.

That file is a source file from which probably part of the smedsnet.dll was compiled. Itīs the name of a file the programmers had, so itīs not on your computer.

Another thing, I seriously doubt there is anyone in the world (or in the civ community anyway) who can decypher all those numbers you gave.

The problemīs probably in the rules.txt as you thought. Try replacing your rules.txt with the original one and see if it works, then gradually reintroduce the terrains, units, technologies etc. You may have deleted a line somewhere for instance.
