Landmarks
Does anyone know what all the random landmarks do? Like Upland Wastes, and Sea of Chiron, and whatever else. And the new ones in Alien Crossfire I am completely at a loss to understand. Can anyone help?

I don't know about smax, but in smac, you can use the ingame help-general-landmarks section to see what each landmark does. There are some that are functionless.

Landmarks not listed in p.44 of the SMAC manual, or pp.15-16 of the Alien Crossfire manual, are good for "colour" only.

Landmarks are useful for way more than colour. The ones I can recall off the top of my head:
Sunny Mesa (high terrain suitable for energy collection)
Pholtus Ridge (+1 energy per square)
Garland Crater (+1 mineral per squre)
Freshwater Sea (+1 energy or nutrient per square (can't remember which)
Manifold Nexus (+1 Planet rating if inside your territory)
Borehole Cluster (3 pre build boreholes. May not add to eco-damage)
Geothermal Shallows (+1 energy per square and all coastal shelf)
Sargasso Sea (all fundus with pods at the center)
Unity Wreckage (bonus items in some squares if you are the first to move a unit into them)
Sorry Diva, I misread your post. I believe you are correct that the ones not documented are only for colour. I think there are some that can only be added throught the scenario editor too (somethingorother canyon).

Truly, while some landmarks are functionless, some will offer minimal benifits such as elevationfor solar-Sunny Messa(helpfull on a heavily eroided planet) or a protective ( and benificial ,if you have the right SP) fungal field as well as a slew of pods - New sargaso sea. Remember, I did say minimal. But for the most part, I've found much of the info in the data links, thanks to a sugestion by one of the wise ones
