Technical Problem Running MGE
I'm playing Civ the other night. I stick the CD in my DVD-ROM drive and it opens and loads up fine. I open my saved game, and I can see everything perfectly well, but...

I can't hear a damned thing.

I go to where it says "Set Music" and I get, "You must have the Civilization CD in your drive to be able to use this option."

I curse and scream at the damned program, because my CD IS IN the damned drive.

Any solutions on how to fix this? I suspect it may be some sort of registry problem, if that helps...

Do you have a second CD drive?
I'll place a small wager that your CD-R drive is D: & your DVD is E: - and although you loaded Civ from E and it detects that the disc is present it is actually looking at the first drive (D) to play the music ... fairly standard problem with old games ...

No, I don't, Scouse... I have a burner on drive M and the DVD drive (which I use for everything, CD, DVD alike) on drive N. I previously had a problem with it where AutoPlay wasn't working, and I fixed that one by tapping into the registry, so I suspect whatever caused that to go wrong is causing this as well...

Sorry, reismark, but one of us is failing to understand the other - you state that you have a burner on drive M - this is second CD drive and has - as I guessed - a lower letter than your DVD drive (N) - so unless I have again failed to understand you - my previous diagnosis stands ...

If I am indeed right - a quick patch is to reassign the Burner (CD-R) to a higher dirve letter (say P) and I suspect that your music will return ...

Right click on "My computer" select "Properties" then select the "Device Manager" tab - expand the "CD-Rom" entry - select your burner and double click it - choose the 'Settings" tab from the resultant properties and reassign the drive letter in the bottom two drop down list boxes - you will then need to reboot.

A serious pain, but it should work

Scouse, thanks for the tip. I've been puzzled by this problem for months, so I was happy to find your idea. That seems to have done the trick, but I have a couple thoughts about this issue:

1. Right after I first reassigned the drive, I didn't see any change. Tonight, I allowed the intro movie to play, and voila, the music played for the first time! Tonight was the first time I've ever heard the Civ2 music. I'll keep an eye on this to see if the music now plays each time I fire up the game.
2. Another complaint of mine concerns the wait time when returning from a diplomatic popup, or waiting for the AI to finish it's turn(s). For me, the wait time would sometimes make the game so frustrating I didn't want to play! Once I was able to play the music, this delay went away. The only thing I can figure is that each time, the program was searching for the music, but couldn't find it, and this produced the delay. I'm very happy to have gotten rid of this delay. Thanks!

Having the music makes the experience slightly more enjoyable for me, especially having never heard it before. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is a permanent fix. Thanks!
