OK if you guys are done with the mushy stuff, can anyone open the graphics files for this thing. I tried and it told me that Adobe couldn't parse the file and Imagoweb told me that it wasn't a valid format. Did he do something to block anyone from viewing (I mean pirating) his work.

Graphics and a question
I looked at this scenario yesterday. I suppose it's no surprise to say I have a very similar one close to completion. Unlike Alex's,
-It's made for Test of Time
-Players can choose their side (Whites, Reds, Entente, Cossacks, Japanese, or ex-Subjects of the Empire like Finns, Slavs and/or Baltic peoples)
-the map stretches from the German frontier to Japan
-Trains stay on train tracks
-It involves all facets of the conflict, from the early days of the Revolution to international intervention to the wars in Central Asia.
So I'm pretty confident the differences are enough to justify posting my scenario.
However, much of my units have come from Alex's pics. I have used just about all the ones he has posted on his site, and changed others. As a Russian and a good artist he is uniquely qualified to make the definitive set of units for a scenario of this kind. But after repeated requests to get his official OK he has yet to say da or nyet.
(by the way, I started the scenario, opened the scenario editor, made one small change to a unit, and saved the units file. This makes a new .bmp file that is easily opened)
What do you folks think? Does anyone mind? If he is done with Civ and I credit him, what could his objections be?

That's no surprise, he always did that with the files he wants to keep closed most (usually units, city and terrain files). Adobe is incapable of opening these files, but you can open them with Ulead PhotoImpact or, very simple, with the Fantastic Worlds Icons editor . I did that once with his Spartacus graphics, and did the copy&save entire set option, and saved them in other folders. It can be done a lot easier than that though.

Go for it, Mike. Alex has accepted the public domain tradition of Civ2 for years now.

yeah, go for it Mike! Thanks Stefan for the write up, I appreciate it. Also for Alex's GIFs, if you don't want to go through all that, you can hex edit the first line so it reads "GIF89a" instead of "GIF..."

Go for it Mike. I for one would like to play your scenario.
Alex has stated that he is finished with Civ, so what can his objections be?
Copyright is meant to protect an author's work. It is not meant to allow an author to hide or withhold his work from the public. There is such a thing as "fair use": as long as you acknowledge Alex's authorship and you're not making any money at it, everything should be fine.
Alex's contributions to CivII will live on through his artwork - this is the sincerest form of flattery. . .

I did the same thing as Stefan, using the FW editor (I never actually realised it was a copy protection issue - thought it was a difference in format or somesuch) and it seemed to work just fine except for the fact that it removed the authors signature from each of the units. It wasn't until I later saw a compilation of said units that I noticed it was missing.
You might want to either put his sig back in manually or let him know what happened and why before using any units in any released scen (assuming you use the FW editor anyway).
Just my 2 cents for what its worth...

I don't think that it is a copyright issue, I figured that he just didn't want someone using his newer units without him knowing.

Okay, how do I hex edit: i.e. what programs can I use, where can I get them, are they easy to use.
I already did the units editor approach but it appears that it erases some of the little stuff in the files.
Being the artist that I am. I enjoy looking at all the aspects of the art to see what I can learn.

RCW Graphics
Done. I replaced a bunch that I cobbled together. Techumseh, all the units you made are still being used of course. Give me today to get reacquainted with the events file and I'll tell everyone what's up.
