I failed- Again!
I Tried the OCC again, using some advice from this forum, and did quite well. The Carthaginians were conquering the world while I was doing it, though.

I found a spot with 1 wine, 1 wheat, and 2 pheasant, a river running through it, and a few hills. founded in 3350 BC.

I went for republic instead of monarchy, and got it about 150AD. The Collossus was already up, and soon was working on copernicus. soon as I got republic, I turned the pheasants into buffalo (master genetecist, I), and the wheat into silk. Got copernicus and shakespeare no trouble, but had a race for Issac again, and beat the Indians by 1 turn.

up the long ladder to space flight, I found myself building nothing but caravans and freight, making a tech every 2 turns. gave techs away, but stopped giving them to carthage when I noticed they were conquering the world. I would have gone for Leos, but Carthage beat me to it.

Discovered space flight in 1874, and built Apollo the next turn with 12 caravans/freight, leaving 15 left over. in 1893, I took a break from building my last module to make a few mechanized infantry. I had nothing but warriors and a chariot in my capitol. Bad mistake, Carthage Launched a turn before I did.

I launched too, but Carthage then declared War on me and took me 3 years before either ship landed. dang them

Good work! Launching before 1900 is nothing to sneeze at. That's a huge improvement over a 1950 launch, for instance - 55+ turns better!

I can still give you advice, but not for long, I suspect, as I once landed in 1880. If you beat that, you can give me suggestions to improve my game. I must try to do better some day soon...

Great going FB - you are so nearly there - why don't you try one of the comparison games - prefererably an early one without too many bells and whistles - at least then you are assured of a good starting location ... ??

Yes. Pheasants aren't exactly optimal.

I made it!!
OK, I actually went back to 1750 and reloaded for another try. by refusing to give the carthaginians any more techs, I controlled their rampant expansion. if they got less than enthusiastic, I gave them 50 gold instead. The romans then expanded madly.
once again, I built apolyton in 1875, and this time I launched in 1900. I kept giving my big roman neighbors money while I built up my defenses, then stopped when I felt I was doing good. they never did attack.

ALPHA CENTAURI 1915!!!!

on deity, no less.

Well done FB. I have made several tries at the "old fashioned" OCC game which was posted by SG, I think. I have slowly improved from about a 1930 launch to an 1870 launch, after about 9 tries.

It is a good one to play if you have not tried it - 2 whales, lots of rivers, forest on the rivers, a fish and a buffalo.

Also, the city is behind mountains, so you get little interference from the other civs, if you are nice to them to start with.

I think most of the experts recommend stopping gifting at around combustion.

Is that one of the comparison games? I'll have to try it.

I think the idea is to stop gifting before combustion, and don't give combustion away, since it is a direct preq for flight, which cancels the collossus of rah.

if you stop gifting around then, the others won't get into the space race with you and beat you with their superior production. a lesson I've learned the hard way.

GREAT --- sorry I didn't notice before now, but that is really good news - the first win at Deity is sooooooo sweet -- now do it again and again, until it becomes not if, but when!
