MP (Max Payne didn't)

Why is everyone saying that you must have MP to make a good game that will appeal to the masses.

Max Payne (interesting initials) had no MP function and was initially slated with many of the magazines skepitcal about it. It was also released with very little pre-release PR, again it got slated for this and many thought the whole thing was going to be a very hyped flop (like daiktana).

However Max is fantastic (and as a rule I really don't like FPS games) - but it was great, a bit short though.

I am sure that Civ will be just the same with or without MP and of course no one has confirmed or denied this yet. SMAC was pretty good (my friends have laptops and I have a 16 port hub so we could play for hours). Firaxis have stated they're on the forth use of their engine so my guess is that MP is in.

Max Payne shows that you don't need MP capability to be a hit and even a genre breaking game - even in the internet age.

Well, maybe your right. Civ-3 will initially be released as SP - but with added MP just around the corner. SMAC had it, and Civ-3 will have it also - its just a question of when.

Yeah you're right - just wanted my two penny worth. Now I suppose we could run a book on whether the developer update of the week will be on MP or not??

I say YES - probably.
