You could trade away the horses at least, and maybe temporarily the iron (if not too many things require that).

Overall I think this is the most interesting UU to date. Interesting in that the advantage lies in the lack of need for resources, rather than in better attack, defense, or movement. A good idea by Firaxis which will add more depth to the game.

These units really could be tough in MP games.

not true.

if a city is nto on the trade route, even if you have iron and horses, you cant build a knight in that city.

That's right, I didn't think of that. Their unit can be proven very powerful.

What if you get Elephants by Polytheism. That would be long before knights are invented.

The War Elephant is the Indian version of the knight. Though it shares the same attack, defense, and move ratings of the knight, it requires no natural resources to build, whereas knights require both horses and iron.
Indian War Elephants come with Chivalry and not Polytheism, they replace standard knights (ie the Indians once they discover Chivalry can only build War Elephants and they cannot build knights)

I think you're right! But this sucks - the elephants will never turn back Alexanders army in civ (Unless you think the indians were very advanced at that age).

No elephants in the ancient age!!

It should have replaced the horseman and had lower stats!

You can't be 100% sure. It replaces the Knight, but it would do that if it came earlier too, but I think you are right, that was just one of my brainstorming results.

well i'm 100% sure of it, but that doesn't mean i'm 100% right
but really most likely the Indian War Elephant will come with Chivalry and not Polytheism

The fact remains that the graphical symbol in the tech tree for Polytheism is a picture of the War Elephant. Why would they do this is the War Elephant doesn't come with that tech? That would only sow confusion.

well if we are arguing over whether the War Elephant come with Polytheism or Chivalry then we don't have time to flame firaxis for not including MP

but seriously Harlan, they said the War Elephant replaces the knight for the Indians, and since they didn't specifically say that it came with polytheism which is quite a bit earlier in the tech tree i think that most likely it will come with chivalry...if it did come with polytheism, then the Indians could have a 4-3-2 unit that doesn't require any special resources to build, before other civs would even have horsemen...why would they have left out this fact?

To avoid us from telling them that it is unbalanced

well maybe we could still argue over it, because it could be unbalanced if either way...we won't let them get away with anything

The icon for polytheism (at least in the older screenshots) is an elephant...

looking at real history the belief in a number of gods has nothing to do with elephants, much less War Elephants, i do not see why people associate Polytheism with Elephants, except that it was in Civ2, just remember that Civ3 has switched various things around, so elephants are out, except for the Indian War Elephant which replaces knights, which come with Chivalry
