Am I a freak?
Has anyone else replaced the original units.gif which came with Civ 2 with much nicer graphics for the same units?
(so when I play normal games of Civ 2 I no longer have to look at the tiny blured units Microprose intended me to enjoy)

After many years of slow modification,I wouldn't be suprised if everyone's Civ2 is different, unless you're a multiplayer person.

Have you looked at Mindseye's "HiRes" modpack available from ACS - Tim uses photographic originals and reduces them to playable size - very impressive!

I've almost always used a modified terrain graphic set, modified rules.txt and city.txt (dozens of alternative civs), etc. Why not? It's one of the best parts of the game.

Most impressive units, Mindseye.

I like the chick in the miniskirt with the gun and dynamite. Also the grim reaper is cool.

Am I a Freak?
Back to the original question, whether or not Case is a freak. We have insufficient evidence at this time. However, people who play one computer game obsessively for years could be considered suspects for wierdness. This, however, is not a bad thing.

By the criteria I set (eg wether I'm alone in modifing the game) I'm not a freak. However, as that's in relation to other people still playing a 5 year old computer game, I'm not too sure of my true status

As I see it Case this is really two questions in one: 1. Are you a freak? and 2. Is it normal to change your original graphics?

The way I see it is that yes you are a freak, but that is besides the point. It is a small matter since you are among your people here. We will not look down on you for this. To answer the second question, it is quite normal since you are just improving the game for your own enjoyment. I do not even play the original anymore, I only play scenarios. I also prefer to use regular units and do not care much for the Hi-Res picts. They are good looking though.

I have two copies of Civ installed. One for (groan) Zone play that is the same, and another altered to play on Gigamaps, which has modifed units.gif and rules.txt

Some changes in my custom game:
Paratroopers function like helicopters, Attack helicopters like fighters used to.
Bombers have 3 range, fighters 2 range for escorts.
Subs have increased movement and attack.
AEGIS can carry missiles.
Carrier has x2 versus air, higher defence (not that the AI ever builds)
Marines have 10 attack. (actually useful)
Tanks have 11 attack(in order to help out the AI hordes)
Alpine Unit picture is replaced, renamed Elite Inf.

I did the same about two years ago, I designed a collected a new set of graphics for the game, I them added these. Letter I used the extra techs and unit spaces to add to the game a little, but its still very much the same. I think this just adds to the games playablity after a will the original graohics just don't live up any more. So we all improve the game in little ways. Just enjopy them.

Yes, installing mindseye's Hires units mod really revitalises the game despite the rules remaining the same. It's still my default graphics set although I'm not playing civ2 much these days.

On the glamorous spy image - looks like it's not going to be around in Civ3.

Case, appears the consensus is you are a freak, but that's not so bad OR that you are quite normal for this enviroment which is itself a little freaky.
