I played a demo of Anno 1602 about a year ago. It's very addictive and cleverly designed game (I played the same demo levels for 3 months, I think).

First play the tutorial (which is very helpful) and then start playing on your own. Soon you'll learn the concept of the game.

Otherwise, trade and good city planning are very important. Make good use of the gold you have. Take care of food (fishing), lumber and other stuff (you should learn that from the tutorial). You should have started tobacco, sugar etc. farms before you run out of money. Building industry and thus satisfying the demands of colonists will bring valuable money from taxes, and once you make a good profit, you should start the mining and weapons industry.

The demo had a time limit or whatever that was. It really made me angry. Since then, I've been trying to find the game on the net but no such luck yet.

And watch out for the sequel (or is it prequel) called 1503 due out next year. The home page is at http://www.anno1503.com/english/index.php4?language=2.

i've got it, it is ood but wears thin as you build tons of houses to pay for the services then you have to get more services and so on

houses and food are the main priority, and stuff to trade.

For me it becomes a bit of a strain once you have to expand to a second island. I don't mind managing one, but carting resources from one island to another by ship in order to get the second island going was tedious and where I gave up. I'll probably go back to it and have another go though.

i agree.
its ok when the second is just a clony of tiny houses for income but when you have got two islands to get enough resorses for one...

I colonised second island mainly for resources (metals etc.). Then there were those pesky neighbours who have a slow start but suddenly colonise all islands in no time.

i dont like the ai, its too perfect. at the tart the road grid is all ready in place then it fill them with stuff often badly, planting its own forests, then all at once all of them get another island.
for you its very hard to get the balance right but even on easy they can do stuff easy with only 2nd level houses.
