I think there are 3 levels, but I'm not sure - there may be 4. I haven't played the game in over 2 years.
As for the warrant notices, I don't think there was any purpose to them - apart from letting you know you've got a pricetag on your head - so I think its safe to get rid of them.

Hmm never thought death warrants were more than a few gold, but they aren't anything unless you need them for personal reference on story.

Okay, thanks,
Any idea on who I may meet on the 3rd level? I got killed yesterday on the 3rd level after 4 raiding groups of Kobolds... Also, any directions so that I may minimize casualties?

You're in Nashquel with lvl 1 - 2 characters? You have some hard times ahead of you, that I can guarantee Just go for the bottom of the map (north) as much as possible.
I did not do the Mines until at level four or five, but it was quite easy then.
I can not remember the start well, sorry. I myself played the game until just before the ending, then I had to return the game to my friend
Altogether a nice experience. Not to mention BG 2.
It just bugs me that those four dwarfs at Durlag's Tower we're virtually invincible.

How did you get to level 4/5 without going to nashville?

Go to Beregost first! And do the areas on the way to Nashkel. Which includes Beregost.

Precisely. Don't hook up with Silke, kill her instead. And do the various quests available. Maybe lvl 5 was too much, but four certainly. And some good items, of course.

So, I guess you haven't been cheating.... Use the cheats if you're desperate but otherwise don't use them.

Cheats?! Avoid at all costs. No one is that desperate. Use them only if you have played the game once through and want some extra fun for the second time.

Oh no, I didn't cheat.
I gave up on the underground levels and went with Minsc to the Gnoll Stronghold, I'll ditch my Cleric there and pick up the Witch... hopefully she has a 'heal' spell. Right now I am trying to get across a bridge and kill a brown bear.
Bob- I've already been to beregost... Interesting note: I was ambushed by 8 hobgoblins 6 dogs and a white wolf... then I had to restart

Sure, you can finish Nashkel mines anytime. Get the much needed experience and levels first. BTW, there are two paths you can take on the way to the gnoll stronghold, as far as I know. One is south-west and the other is west of Nashkel. And when you get to the stronghold be sure to check out the two caves south (when you cross the stronghold bridge go south).

Sorry, I don't check this forum much and I think I gave slightly misleading infomation.
The 'witch' is actually a specialist mage (Invoker) with no healing ability at all. Personally, I disliked Dynaheir and you can turn Imoen into a better mage by dual classing her to a conjuror or an illusionist when she reaches lvl 6 as a thief.
A good cleric is to the east of Nashkel. You'll come across a halfling trying to sell you a Stone to Flesh scroll for a statue near him. The price is 500gp, but turn him down and go to the temple of helm in Nashkel and buy one for 200gp. You'll need another one later, so remember to pick up another when you can afford it.
Back to the statue, use the scroll on it. This will de-stone a cleric called Branwen (true neutral) who will offer to join your party. She is quite good with both melee and healing.
Btw, later in the game, specifically cloakwood forest, you come across another npc on a bridge called Coran (fighter/thief). Like Kivan, he is one of the best npcs in the game.

Thanks Quile, but I could really use a good wizard- do you know where one is? I have no magiccaster except for my DarkElf cleric.

If you manage to clear the Nashkel mines, there's an interesting mage npc available. Although, his general outlook on life may get a little wearing on the nerves.
Also, Branwen is a better cleric than Viconia, and wont leave if your rep gets too high (>18).
Alternatively, place the attached file into the 'overrides' directory which will stop any leaving due to extreme reputation (high or low). They will still complain though.

Is it a good idea to continue into the depths "After the Spiders" with 4 level 2-3 characters who are wounded badly and have no spellcaster?
2 Archers "1 thief"
2 Fighters
Branwen the Cleric died and my mage, Dynaheir died.

If you continue, you have to be one experienced Balduran to get out alive. I would suggest you return back to civilization for a resupply.
I usually never continue a game with people dead. And I had hard time with the Spiders (WThe place where you get Spider's bane, right?) with level five - six characters.
Maybe I'm just a sloppy player.

Spiders Bane?
I suppose I will just restart the game before entering the mines, and level up my characters more, then attempt it again- thanks!

I didn't get really far, but you can make a ton of gold transporting Ankheg shells from the ankhel farm to the Thunderhammer Smithy in Beregost. That and you can get ankheg armor (but make sure you ahve all the gold you want first, because once you get the armor, you can't sell any more ankheg shells)
As for the Nashkel mines, keep Imoen's Detect Traps on, especially on the third level, with the bridge over lave (four or five traps). After you finish that, the plot thickens, and you should explore the south a bit before heading for the ascending bandit leaders and Baldur's Gate.
I didn't get much farther then Chapter 4 I think, and I was borrowing the game from a friend.
