Help for the new help file
I've sent the new Settlers/Engineers file in, but AFAIK, it hasn't been posted yet. It's not every day the GL gets updated, though, so it might take a while. The thing is, this file is ambitious. I tried to put everything about worker units in one file, and I'm sure there's stuff I didn't add that should be there. Just looking over the file I sent in, I see that I forgot to mention one point that's in the manual, so who knows what else I might have forgot to mention.
That's where you come in. When we get the file up, I want to know what it needs for the revision. Hopefully, the info already included is accurate, but if you think there are errors, let me know that too. Other things I need:
--I usually don't know who came up with all the great ideas that I hear about in the forums. If you know someone definitely came up with one of the ideas or discoveries I listed, and I didn't give them proper credit (which is likely), tell me and I'll fix it.
--SlowThinker, if you have some keywords the file needs, you can PM them to me (so they don't show up in this topic).
With everyone's help, I'll have the file perfected in no time!

ST and I have posted our "Info" threads in the General/Community forum because that one allows html. You don't need to use the format of the Diplomat/Spy and Combat threads, but it is very useful for both you and the readers. Feel free to plagiarize our threads: - Post 1 contains all the information on the topic at hand.
- Post 2 contains directions for use of the special thread
- Post 3 contains references, namely links to your source threads. Names are good, but necessary.
- Post 4 contains the GL keywords
- Post 5 can be reserved for future use
Readers can post comments or new information that you can then edit into post 1. This way the first post remains a one-stop source for all the apolyton community knows about settlers and engineers. Posts containing discussion and responses can be edited to be empty (minimum one character, I think); keep only those that are unresolved or provide details readers might find useful. Thanks for the effort!
The Combat thread.
The Diplomat and Spy thread.

Thanks, I'll have to check this out. At least I can correct my one obvious mistake before everyone sees it. I'll have to just post it and see what happens; one or two of my graphics are a bit wide.

Gastrifidis,
"The Great Library: a hierarchical structure" thread includes ideas how to manage an "Info:..." thread.

See "The Great Library: a hierarchical structure" thread again: there is only a {settlers} keyword (1st level).
I think we could discuss 2nd level keywords in "The Great Library: a hierarchical structure" thread.

All right, I just tried to post my main topic and it's too large to fit. Plus, none of my formatting seems to be taking. Is there any way we can just put my HTML file directly in the GL and then form the Info topic with a link to it?

| Too long? Longer than Post 1 of "Info: diplomats and spies" thread? What happened exactly?
(But you may divide "Post 1" into two or more posts...)

Where is your topic? I would like to see the result, then I could tell you whats a problem.

You need a disk space on a web server and you must be able to edit it. Ask your Internet provider.
Anyway, I think that the simplest solution is to insert your html code into "Post 1": I believe we will solve all problems.

I think the solution may be to eliminate almost all my HTML code; I have too much. I just tried it, and it was a huge mess. I can't even eliminate the topic, it says only forum leaders can do it.

Gastrifidis, my e-mail was not delivered, I post it here:
I am a html greenhorn, but I think that
1. Apolyton doesn't understand the new version of html code of Word 9 (and it is XML instead of HTML probably: xml is an advanced version of html). You should try to export it to Word 8 or Front Page Express (it is included in MS Internet Explorer; I use Front Page), save it via Word 8 or Front Page Express and post the content of .htm file.
(Try to choose a better format under "save as..." window of your MS Word. Or Front Page Express might load worker.htm sucessfully...)
If you won't be succesfull with the export/import, you can follow instructions in "The Great Library: a hierarchical structure" thread (Condensed threads: How to build them) and take my "Info: diplomats and spies" thread as a template.
2. After you will solve 1., you may find out that Post 1 is too long: you will have to divide it into two or more parts.
3. You will have to delete EOLs in your html finally. See Condensed (Info:...) threads: How to build them).
4. You may post just the content of .html file: you have to keep imagexxxx.gif files outside of Apolyton, i.e. on your own web space (ask your Internet provider for example). Or I could put them to my pages.

You're an HTML greenhorn? That's a laugh. But I think I can pare out the parts that Apolyton isn't taking. Maybe I should take up SG's offer to put it directly into the GL, like the Paulicy. Then once the discussion was started, and I updated the file, I could hyperlink back to it.

All right, it's up, and I'm already receiving positive critiquing. (I knew I wouldn't cover every angle correctly the first time. ) One of the things I miss most from my coded file is the ability to hyperlink to a different spot on the same page. Is there any way to do that with just internal coding here in the topic?

Now I think the best way for you (and for me, i cannot edit Info: dips-spies because Post1 is too long) is to start a new thread, to split your original html into 2 parts (150k is the size limit for an attachement) and send them as attachements with posts (for example with 2nd and 3rd post: their body might contain a very brief table of contents of the attached file).
Be careful, you cannot add an attachement to an existing post (you can modify an existing one only): make a reserve empty 4th post with an empty attachement (probably empty must be at least 1 character long) for the future use.
Edit:

When I post my original document, I'm going to have to include the graphics in their own folder. This means zipping the HTML file and the folder together, then posting the whole thing as a .zip file, which I know works with the attachments here on the forum. But I think I'll wait to see if any more obvious objections to the text show up, before I post an uneditable attachment.

An attachment IS editable: you may change the attachment if you edit a post with existing attachment. But you cannot add an attachment to a post that has not an attachment yet.

Gastrifidis,
I started a new Info: diplomats and spies" thread.
I placed the text on a free web server. I think it is a best solution (if I want edit the text then I change the file and upload it). I can register you there, if you want. That server has one advantage: no advertisments, but service pages are in czech language. But I think you wouldn't need them or you would ask me. Or you can ask somebody (Scouse Gits?) about some good english server.

I would probably be more comfortable with Czech than with HTML. The attachment has been added; I even found a program that eliminates Word goofiness from HTML! Hooray! I suppose I could post it independently and start new; I'd like to see how many pieces it has to be chopped into first.
BTW, where is the new Dip/Spy file?

I have the graphics up on the file now, but there's a problem. When I named the site with the "text only" tag, I was under the impression that I could change it later. Apparently, changing the title of the first topic doesn't actually change the name in the topic list, though. I could just redo the entire topic, but that shouldn't be necessary. Is there anyone in an administrative capacity I can ask to rename the topic? Removing the "(text only)" part should be all that's necessary.
