What determines units upgrades?
What determines the type of unit Leonardo's
Workshop upgrades to? For example, two units
(Ballista and Slinger) go obsolete with Tech1. Tech1 allows construction of Catapult and of Archer. Of course I want Ballistas to become Catapults and Slingers to become Archers, but the game upgrades both "old" units to Catapults. Is Leonardo's effect determined by unit slots, or by someting else?

*I think this is how Leo's works*
Firstly, if you have a tech that obsoletes a unit, leo looks at the new tech to see if it allows a unit. It then checks to see if it allows more than one unit. If it allows more than one unit, then the program takes the unit farthest along in the unit slots (counting from top left to bottom right, much like you read). It then upgrades the obsolete units to the unit it found furthest down. It works the same way with two units that are obsolete. The two units just because the one unit.
If you want two units to become seperate units, you will need seperate techs.

you could make a new tech, called Archer, that enables Archers to be built that is not part of the tech tree (preq = no, no). Then in the events file have it say something like:
IF technology recieved "Tech1" the give technology "Archer".
That way you can update both units by researching only one tech. The drawbacks are that you lose a tech slot and the Civopedia will not show the relationship between Tech1 and Archer.

thats the way alex the magnificent made conquest of the far north (good scenario)
I think it might also have something to do with the role of the unit, for example a Legion is obsoleted by a Musketeer and they're both attack units....If a legion was a defense unit I don't think it would work.
Don't quote me on that though.

Actually, legion and musketeer are both defensive units, role = 1. The musketeer obsoletes the Legion because the Legion's obsolescence tech is gunpowder.
