I agree, it would be interesting to have two different unique fighters. it would make the age much more interesting.

I think there are too many ancient uu's but I think it's important to ensure that they match the Civ's golden age. Although the period of a Civ's golden age could be argued e.g. the Russian Empire vs USSR or Elizabeth I Rule vs Victoria era Empire.

I think with regard to modern Civ's being around in the ancient times, players just have to use some imagination i.e Americans until the renaisance period are just native Americans...

My idea for an alternative modern russian UU is an attack submarine (post ww2) which can't carry cruise missles but has a good attack rating and more movement points or perhaps ignores zones of control etc...
