How about saving yourself some cash and buying CivII, and downloading the high-res units?

I know you can turn off the special units, but I'm not sure how much of the rest you can disable.
If you look at the game setup screen (http://www.civ3.com/images/screenshots/playersetup.jpg) you can get an idea of some of the things that are easily turned on/off prior to a game.

We'll see what editing facilities are available. This is one area I know our input has had an effect, considering how much Firaxis seems to emphasise this area when compared to SMAC...

Oooh, that's good to hear. Any specifics on what kind of editors are gonna be included to aid in scenario creation or customizing gameplay?
I've heard there will be something like the rules.txt file, but what about events? I haven't heard much about this.

Not an awful lot has been said. But the fact that they directly asked for our input and that editing has been emphasised in the FAQ since day 1 indicates that they might have read some of those list summaries after all (the one I wrote, for instance...).
