Stacks of units?
One thing I liked about CTP was that units could attack and would defend together. I thought this helped to make combat more realistic. I will be disappointed if Civ III is still based on single unit combat.

I know that the great leaders will allow units to group together somehow, but does anyone know if units will attack and defend together in general or will they still be using the same combat system as Civ II?

i think it's like civ2 except the leader's and post nationalistic armies get to pool their hitpoints or something. we'll just have to see how it plays out

i believe reading somewhere (developers' Q&A ?) that stacked units (armies) will not be destroyed until the last man goes down... so no one dies until the army itself is wiped out.

It will be interesting to see how combat will work.

CTP's system was innovative, but had it's faults- mostly, it the game never made it clear exactly how the system worked.

At least, I never understood the CTP stack system 100%.

Can't wait to see CivIII!!

If it's so hard to kill and create an army in civ3 , is that not a danger for gameplay since the first army will become invincible?

Perhaps all these peacefull strategies, like the roads, etc are made to counter the strength of armies... so that one player could not conquer too much when he gets the army first...

Exactly. I think that all these measures are designed to combat the momentum one's army gets when they sweep through faction after faction, their units getting more and more veteran.

I only hope that armies will not be able to breed new great leaders since it would make the civ that gets the general first too powerful. Maybe you can have only so many great leaders in an age, or no great leaders for armies??? I think that Firaxis must have implemmented something like that.

I believe you are restricted to one army for every four cities.

I suppose it could get a bit like CIV II - going goody hut hunting to gather a huge number of 'none' units.

As your veteran units within the army became leaders you would store the new leaders for either rush building wonders or creating more armies once you have enough cities.

CTP generally sucked at explaining how stuff worked.

Actually I think that the only way armies won't be overpowered is if normal units can attack/defend together. Otherwise an army will essentially be invincible as the have 4X hp of other units.

i think it is a fantastic idea, ctp was crap because you had an infinet amount of !9! unit armies

In Civ 3 armies are ment to be powerfull (as they are in RL - look at the effectiveness of Bismarks German Army in 1870 against the french)

But you are forgetting that there is only gonna be 1 for ever 4 cities, and only 4 units per army. not to many (for most civs only about 4 armies - after that supporting them would be way to much).

And civ 3 team have said the only way to counter an armyis with one of your own.
