Aliens? What aliens?
They were in TOT, they were in SMAX.
If they are going to all the effort to have 16 civs in the game, at least make one alien...

There's one problem though: in order to be "alien" the aliens would have to start out on another planet.
Their unique unit could be the UFO. When they invent that they can travel to Earth and harass the human civs.

Last time we had a discussion about aliens we concluded that the French were aliens (or at least from another planet) and so ET was represented in the game.

If Civ3 doesn't end right at 2001 or it includes anything futuristic, I will absolutely NOT buy it.

I feel the same way. The fact that ctp went into the future really detracted from it. It was as if i was playing with action figures. Let the scenario makers have alien scenarios if the want, but don't put it in the game. However, civ 3 should extend until say 2025, just to have more of the modern age (which is the most fun).

Actually I would like some sort of option to continue into the future. Of course it should be an option so that the purists don't get too upset

What's "futuristic" and what isn't?
Is nanotechnology?
Is bioengineering?
Are stealth aircraft?
Clones?
These things already exist in at least rudimentary form today. So why shouldn't an alternate history allow some of these things to get discovered in 1980?
As for aliens, I'd like to see a chance of alien invasion each turn once SETI (if its in) is built. They could replace the barbarians - capturing cites only to enslave inhabitants and punp out more saucers!

Why shouldn't future techs not be included??(FUSSION IS STILL FUTURE TECH and it is accepted in civ2(as is the spaceship))
There are a hole lot of things that could be added just by extending the theory we have these days.
And what is the problem with aliens???Oh it's true the bible tells only about human beeing...c'mon ppl, have a little flexibility,if you can live with the possibility that a civ could laung in 1300AD to AC.

They should make the game last until ~2050 so that you get a few future techs. Alternative energy sources and a unified theory of physics would be neat new techs, but don't get into the whole sci-fi alien thing. Civ is not about aliens but about HUMAN history, it has been from the start, and it will most certainly be so in the next game.

The only context in which I am willing to see aliens in the game is as a discovery wonder.
You place x amount of research/money into it and every turn you have a 1 in (y times x) chance of discovering an alien radio signal. Alternatively you can fund a mission to Mars or one of the moons of Jupiter and get a 1 in z chance of discovering ancient bacteria.
The nation who discovers aliens should get some bonus, not sure what though.
Because face it, aliens aren't going to turn up on our doorstep, and we are not guarenteed of ever finding a signal.

i'm not going to be a person who says the government is hiding alien bodies and craft from us in the middle of a desert.
sure, i believe that a government could have, and possible already has, made contact with alien life. it IS a possibility, but a longshot if you ask me.
and i honestly think that if such a contact was made, or if bodies were found (as many think), the government WOULD hide it from the public. imagine what it would do to religion.
DESTROY IT. YES.

Yeah, great idea, and maybe we could give it some kind of strange name like SETI.

Euh little question why do they have to be alternatives?
Both things are done now by the human civ.(NASA,ESA,...those ppl aren't sitting back and waiting for the stars to fall out of the sky )
strange ppl on his thread
so afraid for things to be to sci-fi/futuristic(even if those things are already getting a little dated)

I believe I've heard something about SETI being a wonder in the game. Why not? It was in civ2.

That's fine with me, but SETI in Civ2 doesn't represent the actual discovery of aliens; just the search for them and the tech boost given by your efforts.

The only religions that would be destroyed are particularly virulent fundamentalist strains. Evangelical Christianity, Islamic Fundamentalism, and the like.
Buddhism, Hinduism, Catholicism and Islam (in their more moderate forms) are far too resilient to fall apart the first time something weird happens.

And if aliens showed up tomorrow would they be in Civ3? If the government revealed the alien artifacts and bodies recovered at Roswell, would aliens then be historical?
We might suppose that in some alternate history, aliens do visit Earth, or there is an alien crash at Roswell that becomes public. Since Civ3 is about re-writing history, and we don't know that aliens could not visit us, there is no reason to disallow an alternate history to include aliens.

I'm afraid that you have confused resiliancy with apostacy, but that is only my opinion. Further, evangelical Christianity is not "virulent" unless God Himself is "virulent". What is commonly known, or at least accepted in our parlance as evangelical Christianity is essentially following a literal interpretation of the Bible. That is not to say that everyone who claims to be an evangelical actually is one. Jerry Falwell's recent remarks, for example, were arrogant and idiotic. Falwell supposed to know the will of God and that is wrong.
As for aliens, as someone whose only experience with this gaming genre is Civ 2 (pity me), I would find the inclusion of aliens to be a bit much. Perhaps as a feature that can be selected the game could go well into the future and offer game play with aliens and other odd bits, but I wouldn't be interested. Nonetheless, if enough people want the feature, barring that Firaxis is out of time to add to the game, then democracy amongst gamers would prevail. Oh no, I fear I've just opened a can of MP worms!

Mr. Pleasant, if you want to write a mod with aliens in it, go right ahead; I might even play it. However, "aliens" have not (to common knowledge) played a part in Earth's history.
