Custom nations and special units
In Civ II I always chose to name my own nation; I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I'd name it, like, the Painters, with cities like Picasso, Braque, Dali and so on, or the Drinkers, with cities like Jagermeister, Absinthe, Cognac and so on... you get the picture. Anyway, my point is, in Civ III, what kind of special units would I get, or, as in Alpha Centauri, would I not be able to choose a custom nation at all?

Heh...I like that idea! Kooky but fun!
As far as your question. From the info I have read it's probably similar to Civ2. You probably can name your leader/country and pick the names of your cities. However, the special unit you get will be the one that comes with the Civ you picked at the beginning of the game. (ie. you choose the Zulu's but renamed them the Painters but you still only get the special unit that the Zulu's get)
Make sense? Hope so. Of course this is only a prediction as to how things will work. Perhaps someone else can elaborate more....

I'm going to change the Greeks to the Chrisonians and move the starting place to Constantinople (Where else could the magnificant city of Christantinople be?).

Christantine The Great, eh?
a.k.a. ColonyPod?
I often customize my civ to be the Texans. Sam Houston as the leader.

Seriously, folks.
What a lot of wisacres. I'm SERIOUS, please: if you choose to name your own nation (one that's not in the Firaxis list), like for example "the Canadians" and you give it an adjective, like for example "[make predictable joke here]", what will your Special Unit look like?
I'm also unclear if each nation's units are ALL distinct in appearance. Does anybody know?

I fear asking the frivolous crowd for seriousness would cause only more laughs... whatever, I think one of the "modification wizards" should come along and answer your question, but I think you can safely predict that you'd be given the chance (with the civ editor) to even modify the Unique Unit of your civilization.
That said, I guess it shall be perfectly eligible to choose (for the painters) a UU as the "Impressionism" or (even better) "surrealism" or (if modest) "post-modernism".
As for the drinks... a special unit called "Kamikaze" should fit in quite nicely .

I always liked to use the Aquilonians (the empire conan came to be king of ) with Conan as King.
If i were to choose a unique unit it would be the Black Dragons (kinda like the praetorian guard for Aquilonia)
They'd be like a legion, only they'd have black winged helmets and black breastplates. basically, they'd be dressed in black. :-)
I had a list of cities as i recall, but it wasn't very long. and i don't really remember them, its been a while.

I'm assuming you will be able to do it in a standard way (Dan Magaha did so with the Romans in a series of screenshots). However, to change the UU, the leader portrait and so on you'll have to use a separate but easily accessible editor.

Hey, peeps, thank you for showing me respect in the form of some considered answers! I appreciate it big time. Now, I just hope I'll be smart enough to use the Game Editor. (I'm a bit of a cyberklutz.)
