Seperate the toggle for civ-abilities and golden age
I'm not going to be playing a lot with civ-specific abilities turned on, because I think they're silly, but those few times that I do I'd like to be able to play without the golden ages, which strike me as even sillier.

Instead of forcing a golden age, let the small civ-differences define golden ages naturally.

And so, a modest request: make the golden ages a toggle seperate from the civ-abilities toggle on the options screen.

Thoughts?

Well if the toggles aren't included, you should be able to turn off what you don't like with the editor or fiddling with the .txt files such as rules.txt or what have you.

alot of people have trouble installing and running programs let alone editing rules.txt thingies

i now it's not all that difficult, but i'm sure many are little scared doing things like this. what i mean is , if it's not there as an option it's not there.

Well all you have to do is ask how to do it on this forum. Someone will know and answer. As long as people back up the appropriate files, there's nothing to be really afraid of.

And what I'm saying is that if it's easy to edit and an obvious alternate playing style, why not just make a little checkbox in the options screen? I'm not one of those people who insist that Firaxis listen to them, I'm just wondering if other people are interested in this option.

Personally, i wouldnt be interested in this option. I think Golden Ages would add something to the game, but wouldnt instantly lead to your civ conquering the globe due to a GA, or you suddenly losing due to another civ getting a GA. However, if Firaxis decided to add this feature and it didnt affect the release date, then itd be fine by me. Or if they release it as a patch later on, i wont boycott the patch

Agree!!! I want a different button for golden age/civ abilities/ and special unit. THe reason is that i will play whit civ abilities sometimes UU but not often and never golden age.

IMO, CSUs and golden ages are ridiculous, laughable, and should be determined by the players.

But setting that aside (kind of), I also agree that they should be on seperate toggles if poeple would be interested in that.

If you want to disable CSU's triggering Golden Ages, you can use the editor to turn the "Triggers Golden Age" flag off for all the CSU's.

Thanks for the response Dan.

Is it similarly possible to switch off the Golden Age triggers on wonders?

Does this mean that you can set that flag for a common unit?

Each wonder can be set to correspond to none, any or all of the six civ-specific characteristics. If you went in and unchecked all of these for each wonder, it should effectively remove peaceful golden age triggers for wonder-building, yes.

Sure, if you wanted a warrior victory to trigger a Golden Age, you could set that.

And what unit (common or civ-specific) should trigger GA, can be tweaked indevidually for each Civ? If so... then

You can set the availability of units on a per-civ level, so if you really wanted to, you could set it so that only the Russians could build settlers, for example. Using this kind of approach, you could certainly change the triggering of golden ages on a per-civ level.

One thing to be aware of though is that when you start a game, the "Allow Civ-Specific Abilities" toggle is a global one -- therefore, if a player loads in a scenario and turns this OFF, all civs will be able to build any of the units (as long as they have the tech prereqs).

So you can't force a scenario to use civ specific units?
It would be good if you could add this as a last minute change to have a scenarioflag that overrides the settings.

But then what if you want to play a scenario and be able to build all units? This is fine as it is; you can always toggle the switch on or off depending on your preferences and whether or not you're playing a scenario. The scenario maker shouldn't be able to override my preferences for how I want to play -- it should be up to the player. The scenario maker might recommend that you toggle that switch on in the introduction to the scenario, however (assuming there are intros like in Civ 2).

Wow! They weren't kidding when they said Civ 3 included powerful editors... Mod makers should have lots of fun with this
