"We've uncovered a few bits of flotsam from the Unity. The metals have been melted down, and the plastics recycled, to provide some raw materials for our industries.

"Our explorations are bound to bring us into contact with other factions eventually. We already know where our trade partners, the Spartans, can be found; but the other factions have remained hidden from us so far. Even the Gaians, who we first spoke with long ago, are known to us only as a frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum.

"My admirals have urged caution, because some of those floating worm masses we've seen might be hostile. I fully agree, and I've urged my shipwrights to equip a few ships with the new Trance-trained personnel that our psych department has said may provide additional protection from the mindworms.

"I look forward to the day when my people will no longer need to live in fear for their very lives from the wanton and senseless violence of this hostile alien world."

Diary of Luvsdem Rokks , Senior exploration geologist

The land is nothing like earth. The structures and formations are unlike anything I have ever seen. I can only surmise that the decomposition of fungal matter causes these differences but it will take years of study to even grasp the basics of this geology.

Our camp was alive with excitement yesterday when we picked up what seemed to be a transmission from another faction here. We are pretty far from home base so we might pick up things they cannot. I listened to the recording but for the life of me could not pick out a thing. The comm guys seemed pretty certain though.

The chancellor toured here last week. He liked what we are doing and said our work is the "key to prosperity". That doesn't improve the food here though.

well its almost chow time-- I'd hardly bother to eat but there's a cute new geophysicist and if I hurry I can make sure to sit near her and ask here out-- I do have a great bottle of wine . . .

"The Gaians called me today, after a few decades of silence. Lady Deirdre Skye has decided that my Free Market economy is a threat to Planet's ecology, and has decided to eliminate me. She has declared Vendetta on me. I don't think she even knows the location of our cities. Unfortunately, I also don't know the location of hers.

"I've offered her comm frequency to the Spartans, who have been our trading partners for many years. The Spartans have traded us some of their military technology, in exchange for our social and academic research. Perhaps the militaristic Spartans can decipher the working of the Gaian mind, bent as it is upon violence. Maybe they can talk some sense into Lady Skye. If not, then perhaps the Gaians would be foolish enough to declare Vendetta on the Spartans as well. A Gaian/Spartan war would almost certainly lead to a Spartan victory, neutralizing the threat that Deirdre poses to our peaceful society.

Deirdre has called an election for governor. The 3 AIs are throwing their support behind Roze, who leads the power graph.

I've never played multiplayer SMAC before, so I'm not sure exactly how the voting will proceed.

Does this mean we're allowed to talk directly to each other now?

yes

once the council is called we are free to talk-- the etiquette for future election calls is that the first human to call it or see it should announce it so that any human candidates can attempt to sway votes through negotiation (usually by email)

On the positive side, we are entering a new era of trade and prosperity for all mankind (even the Gaians, I suppose).

Personal log, Col. Northswordsman:

Along with contact with the other 6 factions that exist on this horrible world, comes some headaches.

(swallowing 2 headache pills with a sip of water.)

Some of these leaders are pleasant to deal with, offering peace treaties along with some needed technology we have not been able to develop on our own. Even the University had some nice information to trade, which I found immediate use for. Even researchers have their uses.

But some of these leaders are intractable, especially Dierdre, Roze and Aki-Zeta. They will provide some sport for my crack troops.

I cannot allow a bunch of wimpy peace-lovers dictate what I can and cannot do with my troops. We shall see.

Along comes with this comes the news that my son has died. He did not survive 2 days past his birth due to some medical problems. Our lack of medical technology is regrettable in the extreme. Sigh.. I must force myself to be the emotionless leader that my troops demand. We are at war. There will be time to grieve later. If only.... no, no time to think those thoughts. I will grieve when it is time.

"Our psych department was right. The new trance techniques have made a difference in our continuing fight against the so-called 'mindworms'.

"Unfortunately, our brave troops are still only human, and when 3 of those damned worms attack simultaneously, it can mean trouble. We lost a trance scout defending a city today to a new type of lifeform: a veritable sea serpent which came out of nowhere and struck after we'd already fought off 2 of the worms by land. The people of this city are calling this thing a 'Sealurk'.

"The irony of this situation is that I was already sending additional defenders to this city to help against the worms moving in by land; but they did not arrive in time to assist in the battle. At least, if this 'Sealurk' decides to strike again, there will be a fresh garrison ready for it."
