Last night, one of our robotic crawlers stopped delivering minerals to its home base -- the foreman reported that it just came back empty. They sent a recon team and found that the mine had been overrun by fungus -- not mindworms, just that messy reddish gunk.

"I asked my scientists about it, and they came up blank. One of my security advisors, however, feels that there is a pattern to the actions of the native life -- not necessarily an intelligence, as we know it, but a sort of stimulus-response similar to that of a Venus Flytrap enclosing an insect. He speculates that perhaps some of the industrial waste products may be producing a chemical reaction in the native flora.

"I've generally tried to convince my regional governors to keep pollution to a minimum, because unhealthy living conditions are a human rights violation. But I haven't been strict in enforcement of this policy, and some of the new mining techniques have rapidly increased the toxin levels near our more developed bases.

"I'll pass along my security advisor's words -- quietly -- to my governors and try to convince them that cutting back pollution will lead to sustained growth and profit levels in the long term (even if it means a bit more short-term inefficiency).

"Meanwhile, my scientists have informed me that for the next 20 years, there will be some unusually high levels of solar radiation reaching our Planet, and that this could stimulate the native flora. I've informed my security teams of the possibility."

" well yes, we have had some success in warfare against deidre. She has been an intractable enemy and rejects every peace overture.
