I haven't played BG2 yet, but I like the story. Books in BG1 (the miscellaneous Histories) and the story itself give you some useful info on what will BG2 be about.

Back in the days when we knew nothing about those new RPG style games, BG1 was the best. BG2 is a better game but BG1 opened a new door.

Likewise. BG2 is an absolute monster of an RPG. I'm playing through it with my 7th or 8th party and have only finished it once (that group is still going through ToB). None of the groups is doing things in exactly the same way and I'm still finding new options all over the place. I find the sheer depth unbelievable.

I was thinking of giving BG/TotSC a try but I wonder if they would be a disappointment after BG2?

I don't think so. BG1 is still very good compared to BG2 (so I hear) + you learn the whole story (makes you love the second part even more!).

yeah, BG1 is practicly identical to BG2 in terms of gameplay, The main difference is that there aren't as many races/classes. and I guess a somewhat shorter story (and maybe a bit more linear), aswell.

BG2 is better because you can have much more interaction with the scenery and of course the plot takes many more twists and turns. I've only played it to chapter 3 though.

And of course they've put much more imagination into the scenery.

BG1 had dungeons that made me claustrophibic (The Nashkell mines, f.e).

And the beginning is comparatively easy, while in BG2, you work your way out of a hell-hole. This is what make me choose a kensai (the super-swordfighter with the nasty Katanas) in the beginning. I don't think I would have mase it out with a mage.

The thing I don't like abotu BG2 is that you start out around level 8, I've always enjoyed the early levels the most, when you have to rely more on your wits.

But still, you've got all of those fancy pants spells and equipment.

I liked BG1 much more than BG2, which was too easy and boring.
Or maybe I just got bored of the BG-style games...

assur: did you do the sidequests too?

i've still not gotten past chapter 3, and fairly recently have started a new game with a new character (and i wanted to do nalia's sidequest, which i missed on previous attempts)

osweld: i guess you wouldn't like ToB, where you start at 18-20 (somewhere up high) then?

Yeah, I did alot of the sidequests. I found most of them pretty bland, and the storyline quests were even worse IMO. And I hate Irenicus.

Hmm, speaking of Irenicus, BG2 wasn't that easy... the final fight was proabably one of the hardest fights I ever had in a rpg (possibly because I used the wrong strategy)

I don't really mind starting at high levels.... I just prefer the early levels where you have nothing but basic equipment and 3 HPs to rely on.

what only 17 players? i thought there'd be more....

personally, i like being higher level, i tend not to get my characters killed off so easily. must be my hack and slash combat technique

Played BG1 3 times (mage/thief, cleric/mage and paladin)

Played BG2 4 times (SoA only)(dual ranger-cleric, inquisitor (from BG1), cleric/mage (from BG1)), multi cleric/ranger) and started a new multi cleric/ranger to take through ToB.

Either I really suck at this game or you've never accidentally opened the door to the twisted rune lair, coincidentally having a rouge stone in your backpack. Easy and boring doesn't really describe that sort of situation...

most of baldurs gate 2 was relatively easy. but you still had to be careful.

There were 3 or 4 rather difficult battles though.

Never played the first one. But enjoyed the second. only played once though. BG2 is a game I have to get into, and once I'm into it I play the hell out of it. I have the add on, but haven't played yet. I just haven't found the time. But once I start, I don't stop until I'm finished (as with BG2 main game). By that I mean not 24 hours a day. But pretty much every waking moment of my weekends were spent playing BG2 until I finished.

Oh, BG2 is my favourite game, yes sir! Well, Civ2 is as good as BG2, but I think that they just can't be compared in any way. The only thing which really annoys me in BG2, is that my sorcerer is so damn weak, that if someone get's killed, it's my sorcerer who is the main character and I have to be reloading all the time.
I've tried to find the original BG, but I haven't been able to find it. Gotta' find it...

Well that's a quite confusing text, what you say? Ok, maybe I'm just too tiiirrrred....zzzzzZZZZzzz

my sorcerer rarely dies. I always kept him out of harms way (he was my protaganist)

now aerie and whats her name (the mage you start the game with) were hard to keep alive

its a very good game. i prefer kensai myself. don't put prificencies into katana though, the best katana is Valygar's, and that's only a +2 weapon. i'd say longsowrd and flail (for the flail of ages you get in Nalia's quest). three slots 2 weapon fighting, two longsword, one flail (upgrade at level 9 to 2 slots) is what i did.

You're forgetting Celestial Fury, possibly the best weapon in the game but I'm not getting into that one.
