Best CSA?
I apologize if a poll has already been made out of this, but I am having trouble deciding which civilization to play first. As you all probably know, there are certain 'bonuses' given to each civilization based on history and gameplay that make that civilization distinct from the rest. They are:
Ability (civs) - Effect 1, Effect 2, Free Tech
Militaristic (Azt, Ger, Rom, Zul, Jap, Chi) - Reduced military improvement costs, Battlefield promotion more likely, Warrior Code OR The Wheel
Commercial (Eng, Fre, Gre, Rom, Ind) - Extra commerce in city center, Lower corruption, Alphabet
Expansionist (Iro, Ame, Rus, Eng, Zul) - Better stuff from barbarian villages, Civilization starts with a scout, Pottery
Scientific (Rus, Ger, Gre, Bab, Per) - Free random tech at the beginning of each new era, Reduced science improvement costs
Religious (Azt, Iro, Egy, Bab, Ind, Jap) - Production costs reduced for religious buildings, No anarchy between governments
Industrious (Ame, Fre, Egy, Per, Chi) - Workers work faster, Extra production in city center, Masonry

We should really be talking about which combinations of CSAs are the most powerful. Personally, I think Scientific and Industrial make the best one two punch in the game. Of course I'd really have to find out how much the "bonus" adds up to be...

I would have done something like that, but the polls can only have 10 options max. To put all the combinations on here would require 15.

I got the abbreviation CSA from Dan "The Man" Magaha himself! Just look at the javascript that brings up the Civ-Specific Abilities window:
javascript:MM_openBrWindow('devupdates/abilitiespopup.cfm','csa','width=670,height=640')

Goodie huts have been replaced by barbarian camps. In order to get a bonus, you have to destroy the barbarian camp. At least it's always something good...no more huts with barbs in it!
Edit: I'm a Prince now!

No, a scout has an attack factor of 0, just like workers and settlers, so unless the barb camp is empty (very unlikely), it won't be able to do it.
I voted commercial, but industrious has always been a personal favorite. (I guess I just elected my personal favorite combination for CSAs).
Now that I think of it, I gotta tell you, I'd give up food for a week if I could get my copy of civ3 right now. And I'm not kidding. Well, maybe just a little.

I would too! I mean, what kind of sick freak wouldn't?
I suppose the civ for you would be France, since they're commercial/industrious.

Hey, let's team up. C'mon Firaxis, you can't ask for a better bargain! You get to see 2 guys starving for a whole week in exchange for a copy. You just can't say no to this. (like I'd want to eat anyway if I had the game already...)

Oh now you got 3! I would starve myself for Civ 3. Food is for wusses! Hey, my computer is in my basement, with no food or drink. No matter when the game comes out, I will starve. Mind as well be now.
Onto the subject matter...
I think that no one trait is better than the other and that you should probably try all of them. I'm gonna start with the earliest civilizations (Babylonians?) and move on up until I get to Americans. My favorite I think would be Germans because they get better TANKS and are scientific (can't go without science) and military which is really great if you have good technology.

Too bad you can't have a poll where you can rank each selection. I had to decide between scientific and industrious, and then picked scientific as my final choice.
However, like someone already mentioned, it would be easier to decide if we actually knew what the specific bonuses were numerically.

Barbarian encampments and barbarian villages are NOT the same thing!
Barbarian encampments function as 1 pop cities and build units.
Barbarian villages are THE GOODY HUTS.

Well, I guess we won't know the answer to this question until we at least know HOW MUCH "commercial" reduces corruption, or HOW MUCH "scientific" reduces the costs of science-buildings, etc.
Peace!
