Argh. If the game is indeed due on the 31st, it will be a long 4 weeks.

The units look fantastic especially the Aegis Cruiser. Now if only the game would have MP or a decent AI...

.tga viewer
In case you don't have a program that can view those .tga unit graphics, I found this shareware viewer to be pretty good:

AEGIS, Shmaegis
Yikes! I do NOT like the looks of that AEGIS Cruiser. Looks more like a patrol boat to me (an oversize WW2 PT boat). The Destroyer image looked closer to an AEGIS! Look at those windows on the bridge of the 'AEGIS' -- way too large!
I'm telling you, Firaxis, someone got a wrong label on that 'boat'! Please get your art department back in gear (or higher gear) to get the correct images for that puppy!
I had seen that on the Civfanatics site long ago, and had assumed that THEY were the ones that had messed up. Someone please get ahold of some decent US Navy literature, or Janes!!
BTW, the Civ3 Megamix soundtrack is AWESOME! I am just sorry that it ends abruptly.
BEGIN EDIT:
Eureka! For how an Aegis Cruiser really looks like, I found this at militaryinfo.com

It took me about 6 minutes to download on cable. Usually, I get transfer rates around 200kb/s+, but the civ3 server was going at about 20kb/s for me.

Im up to 695 bytes/second, and 45% complete.
Jaybe, could you post the Civ 3 picture of the AEGIS Crusier so we could compare them? Something to tide me over until the Kit is downloaded (so you have about a day ) please

Agreed, but I wouldn't worry too much, it's not the actual unit icon, probably just the build icon like in SMAC or on an RTS toolbar. They got the AEGIS styling right in Civ2, I don't think they'd take a step backwards in Civ3. They even upgraded the ironclad to be more like the Monitor.

lol, sorry to say this serapis, but those pics are THE actualy gameplay units, also, try to remember why they are not so detailed: the units are going to be resized down to a point where you can get only so many objects out of a few pixels.
Also remember that these images are at least 3 times the size of the size they will be in the game. And remember that we are looking at the ship from a different angle, we won't be looking at this ship from this angle in the game.

I don't think so, the game is on an isometric map. When would you be able to look at the Aegis from below its waterline? That's not the in-game unit. You can't see the stern, only the bow, yet every screenshot that includes ships shows the entire profile from bow to stern. It's an icon, not the unit.

Just downloaded the thing! Took me 6 tries and the one that did download took an hour and ten minutes!
Serapis: I think the graphics team took the image in the 3D editor, zoomed in on it and got it from a different angle. It takes about 3 clicks to do that in a standard editor.
EDIT: Did anybody else notice the Babylonian archer animations are screwed up or is it just my computer?

Oh another thing, serap, I should explain myself
and I think you know this, but..
all the units are done in a 3d program, they will do all their editing and drawing at a large scale, then when they're happy with it, they will shrink it down and export it as a animated file.
So what you are seeing here with these images, is just a different angle view from within the 3d program. but they are the actual unit too =o)

Thank you SnOOpy, for posting the 'patrol boat' pic for Shanky. I had gotten back to a Civ2 game.
I DO hope they change it before they go Gold, because I would hate to have to use that boat.
Or maybe I'll just have such an exciting time figuring out how to get that far into the game that they update the game before I need it!

Thank God download last only 5 minutes and 20" on a broad band (fiber optic) I have at work.
Some nice image (marine, Mech infantry) I never saw before.
About the Aegis Cruiser debate, I agree that the 3D modeling of complex units as the Aegis make more difficult to see fine details (a flat image can be detailed a bit more), and given the scale any detail can make the difference.
