Cleopatra the Egyptian?
Perhaps my history is a little shakey in this area, but I have generally been under the impression that Cleopatra was perhaps not an Eqyptian. Wasn't she decended from/related to Ptolomy I, a Macedonian?

Here we go again
Cleopatra was Macedonian
So was Alexander
Catherine the Great and Queen Victoria were German
Napoleon was Corsican
Bismarck was born in Eastern Prussia
Great Polish King Stefan Bathory was Transylvanian
the Han Dynasty in China was Mongolian
So what?
(BTW, After many generations Cleopatre was as much Macedonian as Lincoln was British)

I don't even understand what is so special about Cleopatra? She had a small impact on the Egyptian culture, she certainly wasn't a great ruler, she fled from combat at the battle of Antium, and killed herself in the end. Wow, great leader.
Bring on Ramses II, The Great! Or at least Cheops or something. Cleopatra is a joke, almost as bad as Joan d'Arc. I'm going to edit them both out asap when I get the game.

I definitely agree. Cleo is the steriotypical ruler, just as if they had made Tut the ruler.

Cleopatra is
a)supposed to be sexy (actually she was a short *****, with a large Greek nose and a huuuge arse... but that's just historical truth )
b)incarnated by Liz Tailor in the film
c)a woman
d)Definitely the most well known leader of Egypt
e)starring in a couple of Asterix the Gaul issues...

I'm sure they choice Joan and Cleopatra just to keep the women's lib people happy. Therefor the fact that Joan wasn't ever a head of state and that Cleopatra was a crappy head of state doesn't matter to them.

I'd do the same, but the avatars are probably too good to pass up. Maybe I'll change the name and pretend she is one of their servants. The whole Montezuma in a suit thing bugs me too
One thing you have to follow though is the "rewrite" versus "replay" history angle. If you were in control of Cleopatra, maybe she wouldn't have been such a pathetic ruler.

Huge backside
Historically we can know that Cleopatra had a big butt? Have you seen pictures? Further, not all Greeks have large noses. Jennifer Lopez has a large butt and men love her for it. Having said that, I will agree that there are better choices for the Egyptian leader than Cleo (big butt or no). I will also agree that I don't quite understand the seemingly necessary inclusion of female leaders in this game. PC? If so then I don't get it. How many women play Civ games? Does Firaxis have reason to believe that a sizable portion of Civ 3 purchasers will be female?
Gee, is Jesse Jackson going to post in here soon and refer to New York by the derogatory term he called it a few years ago? Or maybe feminists will invade the forum, complaining about the reference to Cleopatra's rear end.

Here where I live, women don't need implants to produce a big butt... it's all natural
Remember the song "I love big butts"???
