What is this?
Can you guys identify all that you see here?
I mean in particular the gem-like green and white dots on the plains.
Then you got incense and gold on hills and what, a goodie hut?

I'm not sure about the dots.
You are right about gold and incense.
That might be a goodie hut or a barbarian encampment.

I think the dots in the plain shows that this plain will produce a shield. Maybe this is similar to civ 2 (two different sorts of the green plain, one producing a shield (that with the dot) and one without producing one

Ironworks is a Small Wonder, and you can build that in a city that has both Coal and Iron within its radius.

that's from the civfanatics info center, so does that confirm coal as a strategic resource? if so it is most likely needed for ships

They also say that bronze is a resource, and as that has proven wrong I don't trust them unless they have a link to the source.

I've finally found evidence enough to move coal into the strategic resource section.
This screen has coal listed among strategic resources.
The update will take place in a few minutes.

Hey,
With all the recent screenshots and the Gamespot article, we should really update this thread. Aside from the obvious stuff, count Coal as definitely in for a strategic resource (from a Civfanatics screenshot).

Coal is already counted (My last post), and for other matters I'll see what I can do later tonight. And if there are any comments on the layout I’ll appreciate them as soon as possible.

I need to know what should be changed (as the colors make it harder to edit I'll only edit once tonight (after the siteupdate))
Currently I'll add battleships, bombers and tanks to oil. I'll also set Gems to +5 trade? and Deers to +1 food?. (It is based on comparing the same base-terrain and same government)
I'll also change the Silk image to the one I attach here (just one silk on it)
Anything I've missed?

Further changes
I'll also rename cows to cattle and move them up form the secondary sources, removing that part of the list. Deers will be game. The question marks after fish and whales will be removed.
Manhattan project will be added to the Uranium effects.
Gems will be removed form the list and spoken about at the bottom.
Notify me if you notice something else.

I know that this represents a new concept in how we view resources and terrain, but does it seem to anyone else that forests are being treated differently in Civ3? Without really searching, I have noticed forests on grassland, plains, hills, and mountain tiles. I don't know whether they are extra-common bonus resources or "natural" tile improvements, but forests certainly no longer seem to be a tile type in themselves. What have the rest of you noticed?

IIRC- It has been said that terrains are rendered so that all terrains can have forests, and different types of forests on the same terrain as well.

THis is my intuition regarding the dots; there are two green dots on every grassland, and one on every plain; so I think these represent food (Silly, but there you have it; for somebody who can't easily remember how much food grasslands and plains produce). I think the blue dots represent shields.

Um, reading the preview on pc.ign.com, and it seems that they are saying that bronze IS a strategic resource. Course they all could be smoking crack, but anyway it something that requires inquiry. I know I'm confused as hell now (It is a resourse, no it isn't, Civfanatics said it is, Firaxis said it isn't, IGN played the game and they said it is!).

My bad; the preview I read that in was dated May 25... They probably changed it since then...

I'm leery of the incense resource. Unless I'm mistaken, those incense jars have only been seen in screen shots showing a brand new civ, just starting it's game (~4000 BC). I think they're some kind of initial goody jars at starting locations. No other screenshots show such jars, and no resources have been seen existing in such close proximity as the jars are in their screens

Gramphos - BlueHooHoo just cleared up the coal mystery in the chat room. It is a strategic resource, it is required to build railroads, and it is revealed when you discover steam power.
