How many civs do you expect to play with on average?
Trial two.

This should help determine for Firaxis how many people will need screens that are compatible with 8+ civs at a time.

I don't really think it'll help firaxis decide. Civ will be going gold very soon.

True, but I'm sure that they could piece together some barely adequate matrix for diplomacy or whatever other screens.

If they intended to set up a barely-adequate matrix, they've already done it. If not, it's not going to happen.

I´d rather say, if not, Firaxis really should add this feature in the first patch.

At least 10 civs...I almost never play on maps smaller then Large. I'm too much of a builder to enjoy small maps

The maximum -- 16 -- assuming that the AI is up to it.

But I doubt that I'll play on an extremely big map, and it may turn out that the AI is suited to handling 16 civs only on the largest size world.

Actually, on the largest size world (other than custom sizes) with 16 civs, , the ai will have over 50% more space to expand than on the largest map in civ2 with 7 civs, given that both have similar percentages of inhabitable land.

Given that your playing with 16 civs and that about 30% of the map can be inhabited by cities (this includes the water squares in the city radius), each civ should have about 600 squares to play around with, if the world is evenly divided. Thats about 29 cities per civ!

9-12. Gives it a little more variety but doesn't crowd the whole place. My computer's not exactly the fastest one on the block either.

I'd love to take down the full 16 (and I hope the screens can cope), but I've got a AMD K6-3D 300MHz CPU and it'll fry before my hapless opponents.

So it's just 8 for me.

I would normally play with all 16 civs on a huge map. Which would be fun!

I will play only with 6-8 civs on standard or small maps because I do not have the time for the big maps.(job, girl friend ...)

Oh! Now I remember such "other things" from my pre-Civ days...Civ III will eliminate anything other than Civ from my life. I can see my ass groove in this chair is starting to develop just talking about Civ III. I will not get up except for food, drink, and other "necessities." And even then, I hope I can get a mini-refrigerator near the computer and perhaps a complex tube system for the "necessities"

As you can see in this diplomacy screenshot, the interface seems only be capable of supports max 8 simultaneous civs. So what happens with Civ 9-16 then?

16 civs, largest map...
That is, if my crappy computer can handle it. I hope Civ 3 will be a little faster than CTP2 with 16 civs, which took like 10 minutes/turn during modern age

They may put together a table of civs foreign relations. It may not have the cool leader pics, but it does get the job done.

As for CTP, how could it have taken 10 min/turn? The ai was as dumb as a rock!

Maybe the interface for this screen changes depending on how many civs are in the game, so if you had 16 the pictures of the leaders would be smaller and more compact. That would seem the best solution if I were programming it.

I'll be playing 16, as long as my computer can handle it. In other words, I will be playing with 16 as long as I don't have the opprotunity to between turns.

As many as possible, as long as:

1. My computer can handle it.

2. The Civ III interface can handle it.

Assuming both those things hold true, then it's 16 civs every game!

Same here!

And I don't like to control hundreds of cities and units. I like more when every city is important. Much more interesting, much more fun.

well, it all depends. are the diplomatic screens, et al. going to be able to show all 16 at a time. or is it going to be like CTP where anything more than 8 civs and you could not see the remaining stats (i.e. the info screens only show the first 8 civs stats).

i will play on average whatever the maximium amount of foriegn civ stats i can see at once. if all 16 show up on the diplomat screen (et al.), then i will always play with 16 civs (even if it means upgrading my PII450 and mobo to an AMD 1.2GHz and new mobo....hey, i need a reason to upgrade it'll happen eventually anyway, right? )

I'll play my first campaigns on average world/8 civs, the time needed to judge the AI. No tweak through the editor 'til then. Thereafter I'll try the huge world/16 civs (default). IF the AI programming is stronger and more versatile than I've anticipated (!), only then shall I tweak through the editor - I really want to tilt completely the default game before.

My rationalization is always "Shut up and start upgrading!"
But I'm confident I won't need an upgrade for this one.

Will the AI be handicapped with more than 8 civs? If so, I will play with 8 or less. Otherwise I'll try more.

As long as the game functions well with 16 civs (diplo. screens, AI speed, etc.) I think it's the way to go.
