Yeah, a nice, optimistic and enthusiastic column. Apart from one thing, you are still whining about the bleeding resolution. Who uses 800x600 any more? Get out there and invest in a new monitor. If yours can't support anything higher it should have been in the dustbin years ago! Even a cheapo 15" will support 1024x768 so do it!

umm... wasn't it solver that wrote it??

DL!
Actually, it was good. Too bad, I originally thought someone had a hold of the game.
Nice overview.

Good job Solver
Reading through this article just reminds me how much Firaxis has done to improve, solidify, and revolutionize CIV with every game they release.
Can't wait!

Good (P)review, but...

Italics added.
That's not my understanding. I thought that was another snafu from CtP2. Otherwise, a basically well written piece.
For the resolution problem, I know that on a 15" monitor that 800x600 is the standard, with higher res getting a bit small. Another $300+ for a decent 17" monitor (more if you get a brand-name; e.g., Apple). Actually, he is probably trying to save up for an LCD monitor, which would explain his griping.

Snapcase wrote last week's column. I can only assume that Mark cuts and pastes into each html doc each week and accidently left the bio for Snapcase in the place where Solver's should have gone.

Nice article!
But I'm still missing the translation of
the interview with Sid and the Civ III preview,
that I sent to Dan over one week ago.
Looks likes he's asleep or just lazy.
Dan, wouldn't it be time to finally publish
that article? Civ III is almost here!

Thanks for the nice words!
Well, I got my 800x600 problem solved after I wrote the article, shortly.
And yes, I am Snapcase .

I can tweak the rules so that it *does* run on 800x600, or play on a friend's monitor.

I'm not whining, and can show 1280x1024. Though I would prefer 800x600 for the game, still.

"I’ll try editing the game settings file to make it 800x600, but there are high odds the game will reject. If this is the case, I’ll not play the game, and my rants will be very loud - the only chance to shut me up would be releasing a patch with 800x600 support."
That IS a whine!

It should have read:.....but you CAN'T build roads inside of OTHERS borders.
Of course you can build roads outside of your boarders; why else would you have to build a colony? Once your borders expand to include a resource, a colony is no longer needed to collect that resource, just a connected road is needed then. You just can't build roads within other nations borders.

You can build roads in any territory. I do it all the time, especially to link up trade networks with the AI in the Ancient era.

I thought I read in ealier posts that you could not use another nations roads without an agreement to such. I guess this does not mean that you cannot build roads for him, if you were so inclined. Does this mean that you can also go ahead and build colonies inside another nations borders as long as you have a 'right of passage' agreement?

Do you have to be at peace with the AI or have a free passage pact with the AI? If you build the road, can you use it in times of war, even though its in enemy territory?

The roads business
I wouldn't expect Jeff to actually answer you on that point.
I suppose you can build roads anywhere you like. You just can't use the ones in another civ's territory. but if a road connects your capitol to theirs, you can trade with them, which may be a reason to altruistically build roads you cannot use.

I'd sincerely doubt it; this would be bang out of order, pinching another nations resources from under his nose. So I would expect this would be a no-go for even the closest of allies...

Also...
I seem to recall that building a city inside another nations border was an act of war (may be wrong however) so I think it highly doubtful that you'll be able to place colonies inside their borders without serious consequences.

It was an alright overview until he started ranting about the exclusion of 800 * 600 support. If you don't have a moniter and video card capable of 1024 * 768 & 16 bit color its time to upgrade!

You people make me sick! dont make fun of my moniter resolution
Solver I feel your pain. I can only Get 600 x 800 resolution or 800 x 600. That really cheeses me off that theres a chance Civ3 wouldnt run
Jeff, Dan, Sombody!!! Please answer the question. Will Civ3 run on 800 x 600??? Tell me now so I can get a new moniter

Im wondering if you can steal their resources if you are already at war with them. If you're sick of the Romans sending in legion after legion, just drop a colony on their iron mine, and defend it heavily for a while, till they run out of legions. Then they will be next to helpless!!
Thats if you can steal resources.
