Everything old is new again?
Just noticed that some of the ideas in Colonization have been recycled in Civ3:
. Printing Press
. Fortified port automatically fires at passing ships of enemies
. Terrain-resource relationships
Others might be able to pick up more oldies that have been declared "New".

That is great, because Colonization was such a great game. I expecially liked the large variety of different terrain types. For those who not know: Shame on you
There were about seven forest types, seven terrain types, hills and mountains. And a ton of different resources....
I just that game

I think I had Colonization but I never played it. I think it still packed away somewhere but it'd probably take me 3 weeks to find it and then ....well we both know what then..

It was a great game, and yes I think you're right, alot of Colonisation stuff can be found in Civ3 now.

I must admit that Colonization was a great game. I'm glad some of the ideas have been brought into civ 3. The ones I liked most was pirates , forts shotting at passing ships and the fact that when a column lost a unit I did not kill the whole column.

Not exactly surprising. A good developer of these sorts of games should always be looking at what they did right in previous ones, and trying to bring that spirit into the new.
As for the specific items you mention:
- Printing Press: Actually I'm sort of shocked its taken this long to get into Civ. The printing press and movable type were two of the most influential inventions in the last millenia if not all of human history. In large respect the "information age" that we live in now started with Gutenberg.
-Auto-firing forts: Very definitely needed. Active costal defenses will make blockading a much riskier proposition.
-Terrain-resource relationships: Not sure what you mean by that one. There has always been a relationship between terrain and the resources found in them in the Civ series. Or are you refering to the more active role that will be required in utilizing resources?

I never played Colonization , but those additions seems interesting!
Does anyone know if there will be auto-firing SAMs?

Its harder to say on that one. Every indicator we have on airplanes indicates they will be a lot different than before. Without knowing what they are going to do to air units, its hard to make guesses on things like SAMs.
Actually, as I think about it, I am almost hoping that instead of SAMs/AA as city improvements, I would rather see them as a movable ground unit with 0 ground offense/defense, but appropriately high air offensive value. Not sure about air defensive value. Thus you would have units you could move and poisition where you wanted. Even, if you were so crazy, making a ring of them around a city. They would be useless as ground units, but strong protection against an air attack for either other ground units, or when placed in/around a city.
This would make a lot more sense, and much more realisticly match the history of SAMs/AA.

I still wish someone would make a Col2.
And remeber how long we have been asking for naval bases that actually fire at ships that stopped beside your city? The idea is so 1992.

Oh yeah the idea is old, thus it should be discarded?

No... It's just so old that I can't believe it hasn't been reused yet. It's even past the typical 10 year plagerism date.
