CD Rom Problems. Little help!
I try to get Civ cranking, and the message "D:/ is not accessable. Device not ready" comes up.
I was told by an aquaintance to take cover off computer and check to see if ribbon cables are attached.
Being the professional planner that I am, is there something else to check, or if these cable are connected, does that mean the cd rom is french fried?

Noper, nothing else works.
I checked by putting Windows disk in and testing that way.

I got the same message about a month ago... tried everything... opened the box to check connections (well, actually my techno wife did)...
Ended up buying a new drive...
Good luck.

1. check the cables
2. find a friendly neighborhood computer geek with excess time on his hands and have him play around with it.
3. see if someone will sell you a cd rom drive for 9 cents (if i had an extra i'd send it to you)
4. buy a new computer
good luck

There comes a time in the life of any computer when it should be turned over to an expert for evaluation.
Half the time, they can (in order) clean, repair, or replace the problem part.
If not that, 50% the remaining time, they can use most of the computer and rebuild the rest of it.
If not that, you've got two choices, and both involve a new computer. Replacement or upgrade.
If your computer is older than your next-to-last Christmas Tree, get a new computer.

I can't.
Well after about 4 days I ventured forth bravely, and removed the case.
I couldn't tell a damn thing. It doesn't look right to me though.
There's an I.T guy I worked with that will be back Monday, but I'm jonesing really bad by now.
May get a shop to just look at it and see what, if anything, is unplugged.
There's one next to the American Legion Post. Maybe there.

No, that's your mother.
If they're only 15 bucks, maybe I'll do that.
I thought it would be more.

Slowwhand, you should check both sides of the cable. The one connected to the drive and controller on the mobo. Cables don't get loose on themselves but if it was inserted only half way it could have wiggled loose.
Or you could go the easy way and install a no-cd patch for Civ2MGE. No more hassle of putting the cd in. Have been using it for years myself.

Sorry, that knowledge is on a "need to know" only basis. If we informed the public about the wheelings and dealings in the underground part of the software industry it would change beyond recognition!
I can email it if you want to.
