It's officially official: No MP
From the updated FAQ on civ3.com:
Quote:

Will there be multiplayer support for Civ III?
Civ III will not be shipping with multiplayer included. The single-player experience has always been our main focus throughout the development of Civilization III. However, we're working on some cool multiplayer concepts that will take a fresh approach to the challenge of making multiplayer for a turn-based game fun. Once we have more details to report, they'll be posted on this FAQ.

So there you go.

Nah, Cybershy will still find a way around it. Even after the game is released, he will still desperately try to find the MP *button* for weeks until it is not found.
Even though it may say *no MP* on the box, although my guess is that they just won't mention anything at all, he will claim it's a typo and if you look hard enough, that MP is really in the game.

I expect a free third-party PBEM ``enabler'' will appear soon after the game hits shelves.

They will probably have MP strings at least (as in Colonization and Original Civilization II)

Well, what do you expect? Civ1 had no multiplayer, but Civ Multiplayer shipped later. Despite this, Civ2 came out with no multiplayer. Multiplayer didn't arrive until the second to last update. SMAC may have had multiplayer, but SMAC wasn't intended to be a huge enduring legacy, but an "all at once" kind of game (or at least, that's my impression). Now, surprise surprise, Civ3 has no multiplayer. I imagine Civ3 Multiplayer Gold Edition will hit the shelves in a few years.
If you ask me, it's good they focused on simply making Civ great, rather than bowing to the wishes of the multiplayer community.

I have to admit I am more than a little bummed about this news. Although, it is good to know the real story at last.
At least they made sure that the SP was in good shape. God help them if the AI or SP isn't very good. We may forgive the no MP thing, but if they screw up the parts that were being focused on instead of MP, they will be in the deepest of dung.

Not trying to start another uber thread about SP vs. MP, but I don't understand the logic that says "if a game has MP then SP will suck".
Since when does a game have to for-go MP to have a good SP experience or have an abysmal SP story, etc, if it has MP?
There are games that have both. Granted they are relatively few and far between, but these two items/issues are NOT mutually exclusive.

You could have all those Poles go to the bug report page over at www.firaxis.com and report no MP in Civ3, but that would just slow the MP progress down as they have to read all reports.
I say let them work alone, and let noone in nor out until MP is ready . Also have Mark to ban all of them from Apolyton
Actually I don't care. I can afford buying more then one game, and I’d play SP from the beginning anyway. (But it would be empty without all that money.)

If you think for something like civhack for Civ2, I hope you are right.
Still, since CHEAT-MODE is gone I don't know the way to change techs between human players in that kind of game (in HOTSEAT of course).

Hopefully, the new AI (rewritten completely, BTW) should be much better than the old one . . . Maybe it'll keep us busy until MP comes out.
At least we know more now than before, but it took them long enough . Now the forums are filled with MP vs SP, and we've got at least a dozen threads that are specifically about the issue.
I'm getting sick of the issue myself.
Quit whining, for heaven's sake! It's not the end of the world, and you'll be able to get it soon enough.

You re losing it Cyber
btw, anyone remembers that someone asked before that now with civ3 they should release civ2 code?
well, if this turns out to be a total disaster (which I doubt) we can try to beg out old code (surely there wont be ToT2. right? right?? ) from whoever has it, fix the few notorious stupidities, implement culture and resources ....
watch out firaxis, we re not harmless!

Ok so CIV3 will ship without MP capability. Am I disappointed? You bet. Am I devastated? Hardly.
I guess I will use this six-month window before the release of CIV3 Multiplayer Gold - Yes, I full-heartedly believe it will be a game you have to buy (HIT: NOT a download), to brush-up on the inner workings of the Single Player CIV3 game. But hey, this IS America and there are dollars to be made in this game...it's just the nature of the business. Life does and will go on...

Your about as clueless as they come... I have programmed enough games/applications to know that multiplayer/multiuser support is a trivial thing to add. The only reason they won't add it is a, the game is so buggy there is no way it would work. B. They are trying to milk the consumer. I am inclinded to go with A. They haven't released a single product that was even close to stable, i doubt this will be any different. I guess master of orion 3 is the only game worth waiting for. (civ in space) at least they will include multiplayer!

It is actually form March last year, and as I said before I believe that they have made those screens already, but not made the MP code.

Oh yeah .
Seriously now - in my personal view it is appalling that Civ3 will ship without MP. It is the standard in all modern games, especially strategic. Why strategic? Because, now matter how hard they try, they will not write an AI that would provide for a formidable opponent to a skilled player, without having it cheat.
And, although I'm only an amateur programmer, I can safely say that including an MP feature in the days of DirectX is simple. As markusf suggests, they are trying to make us pay for it, or rather for a future expansion containing it. And I'm not accusing Firaxis without any basis - they have shown how bad their Costumer Relations politics are in the case of SMAC/X.
BTW, I'm betting diamonds against chesnuts that every in every gaming magazine review this will be mentioned as a huge flaw.
Finally - Firaxis, change your attitude towards your customers! If you were forced into this by the distributor, resist! If you were not, reconsider!
