Direct x8 and Civ 3
What I am wondering is if certain things can be turned off eg Unit movement. Is it possible to just have them stationary when i move them (they go to the place I select but don't animate). Many of my games slow down with DX7, so can I turn off things that will make the game go slower for me ?.
I was promised a new comp this month, but my mum stepped in and ordered my dad to get new furniture for the front room.

I don't know for sure, of course, but I imagine animations can be turned off.

According to Infogrames DirectX 7 is the requirement. See here.

According to Civ3 site. you need a DirectX 8a video card. Alot of video cards intended for workstations and home office systems have problems with DirectX. The higher the DirectX, the worse the problems. I can run CAD and photo editing programs fine, but even with the animation turned off a DirectX game will eventually freeze up my system. Guess its time to buy a GeForce2.

DirectX 8 has a BIG performance boost over DirectX 7, regardless of the machine its on (provided of course that the machine supports it )

Hmm??? That is nonsense. DirectX8 adds support for exotic programmable 3D graphics mainly. There is no performance boost.
Also, DirectX8 can be installed on almost all PC's (videocard type determines that), but the question is whether it will deliver a bearable visual experience or a slide show.

Surely Lord Vorkosigan can deal with trifles like that, eh, "Adm. Naismith"?

Go checkout some multimedia benchmarks comparing DirectX7 and DirectX8, and unless there is something opposing those that I have seen in my magazines, then I must say it is not nonsense.

You're right Nemo, but DirectX 8.0a has a significant beta element that makes it a little tempremental on older/non standard graphics cards like mine.

IIRC they said that all animations should be able to turn off, but that was a while ago, and things might have changed.

17 in college.........Check
No Income...........Check
£12 a week bus fairs...Check
Loaded dad, who won't give me any money.....Check
Grandfather with Athlon 1.2 ghz, TNT2 Video card ...Checkmate
Though he did agree to a new comp, until my mum ordered new furniture
That my friends, is my never ending strife
Though the story is long here is a quick update on my current situation.
We had 2 PC's a P1 200mmx and my P2 300. A RAM chip melted on the P 200 and Fu*ked up the Mother board, but the Vid card in it supported DX7. Now we have the P2 300 in the front room and bits and pieces of one in my room. Dad got a £1200 bonus and agreed to get a new PC for me until mum stepped in.
I suppose i'll wait until I get civ3 then try the Vid card from the other PC, if that don't work then i'll moan until I get a new comp and play at weekends until it arrives. Although my dad is a little tight fisted, he does give in in the end (he's one of those 'I made my money, You make yours' kind of people).
And don't reply GET A JOB. I have tried, but no-one wants to take on someone part time

Let's see... my priorities.
1. Food and lodging for wife and 3 kids, ..actually, my teenager counts as an adult the way they eat.
2. Keeping 2 cars running and insured.
3. Getting one car out of shop after accident.
4. Braces for daughter.
5. Son's birthday this month.
6. .....
21. New computer.....yeah right,...or maybe a DirX8 compatible video card if my system will handle it. I have an AMD K6, with 64MB RAM. Can I make that work with DirX8? Please advise.

The TNT2 is a sad vid chip by today's stardards. I don't understand how you can have a powerful system with such a lousy video card.

The monitor is fine, all the Hitachi 19" monitors support well over the minimum rez for Civ3.
The display adapter I can't tell. If it is a Trident 9600 series chip, then it doesn't support DirectX. You would have to rely on the DirectX software to render the 3D effects. Not a problem with sufficient RAM, but it will be slower going.
To see what version of DirectX you have and how well it works:
Search for files or folder and type in: DXDIAG.exe
It is in different folders depending on the version of Windows you have and how you originally got DirectX.
When you find it, run it. It is the DirectX diagnostic program. It will tell you what version of DirectX you have and have a bunch of tests that will show you how well DirectX does(or doesn't) work on your system.
