So how long has Civ 3 been worked on?

I realize the shipping date seems a little early and i've been reading what some people have said on this matter (i just got registered today), but i was just wondering how long they've actually been working on the game.

Also, how long do u guys think it'll take em to get multiplayer going??

Well, I think they first announced civ3 in 1998. and firaxis has said that they plan to release a multiplayer Xpack sometime next year.

The game has been in production for a while, I just don't think it has been highly publicized until this year. I know that there was some showing of the game 2 years ago at one of the big game conventions, but which I don't remember.
