Wanted: Dedicated Civ Mentor
My name is Robert, also known variously as RawB_Spartan, Spartan_RawB, and Spartan in Gameleague and Civ fanatics ladders. Over the past years, I've dedicated much of my time and effort into this game, often at great personal costs.
I am a civ fanatic. I love the game, wish to learn more about it, and want to become an astute player.
Over the past year, A-team has coached me somewhat, dropping me hints here and guiding me in the right direction. But these days, we hardly come across each other online, and thus, I am forced to find a new mentor.
As for potential: I rose to rank #4 in Gameleague (though much of my victories came against new players) and am currently ranked #10 in Civ fanatics (and quickly rising).
If you are an *honorable* player who has an in depth knowledge of the game and an astute standing here in Civ community, please contact me. My ICQ is 110939971 and email is robbie_farmboy@hotmail.com
My particular areas of interest is the use of Republic - early and midgame use of the government. I am relatively proficient in early expansion and city building strategies.

Robert, looks like we are in the same boat. I'm looking for someone as well, being new to Civ II. Found an old copy at Walmart, picked it up.

Concerning Carnide's question: How much is the pay?
The pay is non-monetary: My unequivocable loyalty to my mentor and any contribution I can make to the mentor's game (I pick things up quick).
And also, bragging rights. If I go on to become the greatest Civ player who ever lived, my mentor will be able to thump his chest and say, "That's m' boy!"

If you're such a fast learner why do you need a mentor? For that matter, what makes you think there is anybody out there who can teach you everything there is to know? And even if there were that someone, you'd only be as good as what they tell you and nothing more. You might become a good player, but never the best. If you want to be the best, you have to come up with your own ideas and be the forerunner of new strategies.

Don't you think, though, that learning about the prevailing and known strategies will accelerate the learning curve? Simply put, I see little point in re-inventing the wheel.
Also, there are some in-game secrets that are best taught, and not likely to be easily discovered. To list some:
* Tracking down enemy civs by using city screen
* Exploring by using continent number information
* Oedo years
* Diplo-invisibility
* Trade disruption

You can win this game easily without using the little tricks. In the end it all comes down to skill. All there is to know about this game is contained in 1 save file of one of my games. The real skill lies in being able to recreate what a player does. How do you think I learned what I did? I was a rookie too at one point.

Why bother?
Just wait for Civ3 to come out and then you can start mastering that at the same time as the rest of us. I doubt many people will be playing civ2 by this time next year, so just keep on doing what you're doing you seem pretty good already, and then work on mastering the next game.

The Capo...
You should learn the ways of Civ from the Capo, he is considered one of the most fair and kindhearted individuals out there. He is respectful to his fellow players and rarely causes any issues during games.
Just ask Nap Bonaparte, Curumbor Endelil, Ming and the entire HOTW2 crew about it!

You might.

Remember ... Emporer is but a truck stop on the highway of spam to deity.....
Now back to the topic ....
the best way to learn civ is to play it, read the GREAT LIBRARY thread , Play more, discuss in civ 2 strategy any shortcomings and you will receive advice..
and then you need to decide the tpye of game that you prefer,
SP, 2x or 1x , MP , Diplo , Duels ..... etc

Nice to see you here. I am usually playing over weekends and if you looking for a good game of Civ2, you're in the right place.
Hope to catch you around 7-8 pm EST some friday or saturday.

In our current game, your self admitted lack of trade routes is the difference between you having already won and the game being close as it is.
Always remember that each individual civ2 game is, in and by itself meaningless. Just because you win does not mean that you are better then the other player. What makes you better is if you took the other players starting position and were able to win both ways then you are a better player..
Wait to you see where I started ...50 squares of orginal cont..2 huts (archer,horse) 2 whales which were far away from my capital and could not bring into play till 12 th turn of the game!
You have much to learn on the power of trade routes and how to expertly use them. This game can well serve as a model for you to learn from.
If you win, which you are ahead 33 citys to 22 (that number will be reduced as I build 5 citys in next 2 turns and retake the two you took from me) dont make the mistake of just putting it in the win collumn and moving on. You can learn more from a win sometimes then from a lose.

It was finally good to get a game going with my mentor again! It's been a while since we played together. Yes, I must say that you did an admirable job fighting out of a tough situation - and because of that fighting spirit the game is as close as it is.
I do have a game plan in that game, and it should be fun to play it out!
