Thanks for "my" screenshot, Dan.
By the way, the image/link isn't working for the editor screenshot in the Developer Update.

The new updates are INCREDIBLE!! We get the screenshot with the army in it, the Dev Update is all about the editors (complete with screenshot now that Dan fixed the link), and the Ask the Civ teams answers some questions that have been hotly debated around here:
There is an earth map: "Yes, Civ III will be shipping with two world maps. One is a "normal" sized map (100 x 100), and the other is a "Huge" map (180 x 180)." complete with a pic.
Espionage/Air missions explained!!
And much more!!

Dan, is that the 100x100 world map or the 180x180?

Is that editor a final screenshot? If so we have a graphical problem.
The '%' after Chance of Rioting is over half the frame.

Does clearing a forest by default add 10 shields to production, or is Forest Value in shields something else?

According to the editor-screenshot, only move-multiplier for roads can be modified. Not railroads?
Does this mean that railroad-movement are infinite within your own borders (and within peaceful right-of-passage enabled foreign empires?)

That should be customiseable anyways and regardless. Infinite lightspeed of trains is a bit daft.
Spoken from the mouth of the pride driver of the New Orleans Bullet, having recently broken the 100mph record on his way to Denver: "C'mon sucker, try to beat me with your lousy YF22!"

In Civ III, one thing you'll notice right away is how disruptive war is. Unlike previous versions of Civ, you will probably not survive if you spend the entire game at war. In Civ III, you will probably have to resort to military action at key points (your neighbors have coal, which you need desperately, but they won't trade you any), but it's entirely up to you.
|
Im rather concerned about the latest screenshot though. Why, why so few irrigations, mines & trade-enhancing roads, so late in the game? I always managed to outproduce AI-civs, in terms of applying a dedicated & consistent land-inprovement strategy, throughout the game - both in Civ-2 and SMAC.
Are one able to tweak the game-editor so that all AI-civs improves their land significantly more (like one worker for each city), then in above screenshot?

Those are great screen shots! Thanks Dan!
The only problem that I have is that Niagara Falls is sitting in the west coast. Geez guys... can't you make it more realistic!?

In the editor we have a "Turn penalty for each drafted citizen"
What is this- usually draft is for armies, but U just "draft" population to build settelrs and workers is this is a anti ICS measure? Does this apply to workers?

World map! World map! Yay! I wonder, does the army icon look different for each `culture' type or just by era? How about the flag? It'd be neat to see the flags of all the various civilizations...
It looks to me like that's the 100x100 map. If you count the tiles in the screenshot, and then guestimate the number of view-windows that would fit across the mini-map it looks like less then 180x180. Hard to tell for sure though.
Cool update!

Dan (ok... I'm on my knees begging here), can you tell me whether two fighters from opposing sides can fight for air superiority, or do fighters only attach bombers and other attack aircraft?
For example, if two opposing fighters that are set on "Air Supremacy" do they duke it out?

Once you have nationalism, you can draft population (effectively converting population into soldiers). Depending on your technology level, you'll get anything from a Spearman to an Infantry unit when drafting.
How many times you can draft in a city each turn depends on your government type: Republics can draft 1 per city per turn, Democracy 2, Communism 3. Anarchies can't use the draft.
Your citizens aren't too keen on being drafted, though, so this causes unhappiness. The turn penalty setting in the editor determines how long they'll stay mad at you for using the draft.
Dan

Wow. I'm more impressed w/ every update. Whatever the size, that earth map looks far more acccurate than the Civ II one's. The South American coast actually has snow-capped mountains, so do the Sierra Nevada's. And did you see how many cities everyone's got jammed into their continents?! That's something I've wanted in my Civ games for a long, long time. And at best, that's only a 180*180 map, imagine when someone releases a 256*256 earth map??!!? That's gonna make for like an RPG-length Civ game! I'm game for it...

Hey Dan, in the army screenshot, is the unit with a flag the great leader? Is he just an additional icon for the army?
There are 3 knights and the flag bearer who's on foot, does this mean the whole army only moves at an infantry pace, or one tile per turn?
Or simply, who the heck is the flagbearer dude?

Dan
what about monarchy? how many units (if any) can it draft per turn? 1 or 2?
so let me get this straight...if i am communist and i have a size 7 city, and there is an army of tanks heading towards me, in two turns i could convert 6 of my population into infantry? cool
and basically with forced labor i can convert each population point into 40 shields? is there any limit on that?
thanks (especially if you answer)

Don't quote me on this because I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly sure the answer is yes. Air Supremacy is essentially the air unit's version of fortification, you're saying "hey, patrol this area and blast anything that comes into it." If another fighter is sent on a mission that takes it into the defensive range of the unit running air supremacy, there's a chance they'll tango.
If you look at the editor screenshot on the dev update, you'll see a "Chance to intercept enemy air missions", there you go.
Dan
