Civ 3 Strategy guide is out!
I saw the Civ 3 strategy guide in a store this morning. I flipped through it but I decided not to buy it since I'll have all that information in a few days anyway. It was tempting though!
A couple things that jumped out at me:
The new river valley terrain type produces 3 food, but if you are working it there's a chance disease will strike your city.
Strategic and luxury resources have a production bonus when worked in addition to their other use.
If somebody out there with less willpower or more disposable income wants to look for the guide, it was in the Electronics Boutique at the local mall.

Yes, that's it. I presume that was that big brown smear down East Africa--it's the Nile Valley.

Well, I guess I'm the guy with less willpower since I went back after lunch and bought it.
I'll take questions from the floor...

For starters, here's the difficulty level chart someone was asking for:
Chieftan: 4 content citizens, AI build rate 200%, Barbarian combat bonus 400%
Warlord: 3, 120%, 200%
Prince: 2, 100%, 100%
King: 2, 90%, 50%
Emperor: 1, 80%, 25%
Deity: 1, 60%, 0%
AI build rate is how quickly the AI builds stuff (on chieftan he takes twice as long to build or advance)
Barbarian bonus is the advantage your troops have over barbarians
There are also some other changes as level increases, like the AI is less like likely to deal and more likely to break a deal once made.

Something that shouldn´t require too much typing: What are the exact effects of the government types? What does 'worker support' mean?

Is this thing worth buying?
I know that's a tough question, but does the guide offer more than should be included in the manual.
Who am I kidding? I'll probably buy the thing too, at least it will give me something to do for the next three days.

Longevity?! Did you throw that one in to make sure we're paying attention, or is that for real? There was Longevity Vaccine in SMAC. . .

There are a few things that wouldn't be in the manual/Civilopedia (like the chances of success for various spy missions) but most of it you can proabably live without. Or just wait for some poor sap to buy the guide and then spend all weekend transcribing it to a forum.

Does the editor let us create new technologies, or at least modify old ones? (so I remoe the ancient techs, put middle techs in their place, put modern in middle's place, and add the next era).
Also, whaat exactly does seti do? A culture bonus or research?

Longevity is allowed by Genetics. It gives you two new population points when you fill your food window instead of one. Pretty nice if you haven't already maxed out your cities by then.

Mike from Firaxis confirmed this one a few weeks ago. It was in a thread called "We Love the King Day sucks" or some such. It increases population growth in your cities, whereas WLTKDs now give you some other bonus - I think reduced corruption.

The guide seems to imply that you can only modify the existing techs, units, buildings, etc. but I'm not sure that's right. Remember this guide was printed a little while ago, and we've seen things change recently like the Civ attributes. Anyway, you can edit the era of a tech, its prerequisites, whether it's required for that era (and some more flags it doesn't go into detail on.) You can also edit a lot of the little things, like the names of the eras.
SETI doubles research in its city. All Great and Small Wonders product culture, from 1 to 5 points per turn depending on how cultural it is (i.e. 1 for Military academy, 5 for Bach's Cathedral.)
