Systems Civ3 runs fine on
I can Run Civ3
and it is great
I haven't done this poorly in a long time
and the interface is no problem either
I have
Win2000
Athlon 1 Ghz
256 Mb
Radeon 32Mb DDR (why didn't I get a Geforce 2 MX, I was going to..)
and my computer has some serious problem which causes it to rerepearable crash every week (I have to reinstall my operating system)
Oh I got the LE edition
I would recommend people get the SE edition too

Yah, Geforce 2 or 3 really is the only way to go. I'm looking at getting an MSI GE2 with my next system. It's supposed to kick ass!! Unfortunately, I don't know if they sell the model I want in Canada..

Don't have the game yet, but...
I only have a 8MB chip. That's just the way the board was set up, SiS 630/730. So graphics were never my strong point...=)
I gave the system as much memory as it would let me, 64MB...I really don't know if the chip makes use of it, but I haven't had problems with new 3d games.

The only thing that seems to be slowing me down is my HDD. My 'good' one (bleh!!!) died this weekend, so I had to go back to my old 4gigabyte drive, which, I don't have to tell you, is sooo sloooowww....

AMD Athlon 950
256mb RAM
32mb GeForce2 MX with Det 12.41
7200rpm 10gb HD
Smooth as silk, including all videos, scrolls, etc.
I can't stress enough how important it is to keep your drivers up-to-date (perhaps not with the latest and greatest but with the most stable recent ones). This not includes the obvious ones, but motherboard, miniports, bios and others as well.

I've been following the release of Civ 3 with some interest. I was going to start a new thread about my question but this seems like a perfectly good place to ask.
I was just wondering whether anybody reckons Civ 3 would work on my system:
P2 233
352 Mb RAM
Riva TNT2 m64
I know that's below the minimum system requirements but I've been able to get games like Max Payne, Giants and Deus Ex to work, which all have minimum requirements higher than my P2 233.
So what are your general impressions of how Civ 3 runs. Anybody reckon I could run it or would I just be wasting my money?
p.s. I used to post at Apolyton about 2 or 3 years ago as IG-88 if anybody remembers me. Though I wouldn't blame you if you don't 'cos I didn't post much.

Not running...the screen keeps going blank after the intro movie. It's a bit disheartening.
Running a brand new computer...
1.4Ghz
512 Mg RAM
GForce video card
Windows XP
Can't seem to figure it out. But then again, my computer guru friends are unreachable at the moment.

Yeah, can you believe someone trying to run Civ3 with a 4mb graphics card?!?!?
|
On one of my brother's computers he has a PII 233 running with a 4mb video card and it works on there. I have had plenty of other games work perfectly fine for me, so yes I think it is the game. Plus the problem obviously has been reported by other people sine it has the problem I am having has been specifically stated, if you look at the troubleshooting hints link.

I've seen people on the boards with Windows XP having trouble like this until they try the Windows98/ME compatibility mode. I don't have Windows XP (or Civ3 for that matter ) so I'm taking a stab in teh dark but maybe it will help.

Steve, what's your point? The game doesn't need any 3D advanced card AFAIK, nor any resolution larger than 1024*768 is needed.
32MB GeForce aren't required in Sys Requirements by official site of Firaxis.
With that resolution and colour depth any 4MB card should be enough, not to mention many people complaining in HELP section are using system with better Video Card.
Enjoy your powerful system and consider the possibility that... Yes, if all his other SW works fine, the game could really have its part in this trouble.

It could make a *HUGE* difference to scroll rates if the game was using a very large bitmap to store the entire scrollable area, and just blitting the necessary bits when you scroll.
If the graphics card has enough memory, it would all work from the card's memory. If it didn't have enough memory, the blits would have to go from system memory to graphics memory - which is *MUCH* slower.

For anyone wondering - Civ III runs like a dream on a P2 300 Mhz machine. I'm close to the minimum req with a good graphic card and 128M memory and it works perfectly; haven't spotted any glitches yet.
Played a 6 hour session last night and the game didn't crash either, so it's very stable as well in spite of other reports.
And the AI is kicking my butt too in a way that Civ II never did. Great fun!

Machine specs:
Civ 3 runs a bit slowly on my home PC
Win XP
celery 633MHz O/C (950MHz)
GeForce 2 (det xp 21.83)
384 MB RAM
On an office PC the scrolling, in particular, is terrible.
Win XP
P4 1.9GHz
GeForce 3 (det Xp 21.83)
512 RAMBUS
Two Other PC's run the game very well
Win 98
Athlon 1.2 GHz
GeForce 2 (det xp 21.83)
256 RAM
Win ME
P3 933MHz
Radeon (4.13.01.7075)
256 RAM
The last machine runs the game brilliantly!
About time I tried to figure out the problem I suppose

Looks like Win2K and particularly WinXP slow it down...
On a side note, the definition of 'smooth' is probably highly subjective, judging from the claims about 1400 and 300Mhz PC's.

Grim: Rolling back your Nvidia drivers to 12.80 fixes the scrolling problem for now.
It appears to be a bug in Nvidia's Windows NT driver (2000, XP), but Mike from Firaxis also said it was due to sloppy coding on his part.
Whoever is at fault doesn't matter, I just hope they fix it.

I have not gotten the game yet, but I suspect that most of the problems with the screen going drak after the intro movie may be windows. I think all would agree with me the windows has a long history of bugs. That is why when windows ME came out I did not upgrade to it and that is the same reason why I did not upgrade to windows XP as well. I do not trust windows, I think it is the most horrible os out there, but what can you do? One of the reasons I like mac computers is because the os is much better than windows, not as many bugs or problem. Sorry if I got off topic.
