Dog-slow scrolling
Windows 2000 SP2
Athlon 1400
256mb RAM
Geforce 3
Trying to scroll the map takes about one second per east-west hex; recentering the map takes the same amount of time. The scrolling is incredibly annoying but avoidable (use the mini-map), but the slow centering is a major pain in the ass when the game zooms around to active units.
Is anyone *not* having this problem? I'm curious if it's hardware-specific.

My question is why do the turns take so damn long?? That's the only part of the game annoying me...

"I want more features"
"I want more complex AI"
"I want lower system requirements"
"I want the turns to go slower"
Welcome to the world where every action has an equal and opposite reaction. If you make the AI more complicated it requires longer to think about things and so slows the turns down. If you don't want the turns to go as slow you'd either have to make the AI crap or increase the minimum system requirements. It sounds like we got the better deal.

I think it's hardware specific to your Detonator driver. Try rolling back to an older GeForce driver. I haven't had the problem myself with the Detonator driver, but other people have.

There are exceptions to that, Faboba.
Ever played Birth of the Federation?
Turns took about 3x as long as they do in Civ3, and the AI was dumber than a doorknob (really -- doing absolutely nothing posed more of a challenge!).

Which driver do you use?
I use Detonator XP (21.xx)

I was using 21.83 with Windows XP and didn't notice much of a problem, but I did hear some talk of slow scrolling with that driver. So I rolled it back to 1.2.0.0 and it does seem a bit faster (didn't really have much of a problem in the first place, just wanted to check it out.)

Athlon 900mhz
256 sdram
Geforce 2 MX 400
21.83 Detonator drivers
Wouldn't say dog-slow scrolling, but it is quite slow.

okay - this is for us people having extreme slow-down, sluggish, jerky type problems with moving the screen around (among other things)
this is a response i got to a post on another board (for those who generally don't like reading, the basic point is the problem is solved by downgrading your Detonator drivers to the default drivers provided by XP - i haven't tried this yet but let us know if this works for anyone):
"This IS, in fact, a bug. I'm running a very similar configuration to gggie's rig.
Athlon XP 1800+
512MB DDR-RAM
Geforce3 (tested on 21.83 through 22.50 Detonator drivers)
Windows XP Pro
The problem is simple: Detonator drivers break the game.
I downgraded to the default Windows XP Microsoft drivers (drivers that ship OOTB) and the game scrolls like a jetski on turbo. Everything sped up. I was having the exact same problem...2-3 second pauses scrolling, and horrible jerking when trying to position units with the mouse. Downgrading to the defacto XP drivers fixed the problem.
Not sure what to advise for those of you running Nvidia products on an OS without default drivers, but I'm sticking with the MS drivers--in spite of the terrible performance hit to 3D games--until Nvidia and Firaxis get this fixed."

What about those of us using Win98SE? I can't exactly downgrade my detonator drivers to factory drivers because there are none in Win98.
Has anyone tested much lower det drivers such as 10.xx?

In the release chat, Firaxis Mike said that the choppy scrolling is due to some sloppy coding (I think he said by himself too) and that he's working on cleaning up the slider code for an eventual patch. So it's not the system, it's the game.
At least its not a game killer, just use the mini-map to scroll around

Maybe Geforce 3 doesn't have enough power for Civ3.

Try 12.41, which is basically what comes out of the Windows XP box.
