Is there anything I can do to spped up the science
i do appreciate the fact that unlike CIV 2, you can't acheive flight by 800AD but...

science has been slowed to a crawl. or time is really racing by.

has anyone been able to hit alpha centauri by 2050?

thanks

...and if you are having great success with a decent rate of scientific advance, puhleeeeze share with a quite humbled non-newbie.

Monarchy difficulty is damn hard!!

by the way, can anyone share some BC stategies? I'm still doing the found city -> build defence guy -> build settler --> found city --> etc. for about 8 cities....than i start to take over other civs for new cities. worked fine in civ 2 but the dang science is so slow and there's never any dang iron around, i end with 4 or 5 decent cities, 3 crap ones, and perhaps one or 2 captured ones that literally take 200 game years to build a spearguy.

EITHER SLOW DOWN TIME OR SPEED UP SCIENCE!!

am i alone? please tell me where i'm messing up!!!

hi orange
too be honest, i'm pretty much stuck with despot until the middle ages. then i just get feudalism and work back wards to get republic.

i know historically despot/tyrant ran things for a long time but simply monarchy showed up fairly early as well.

i like playing the chinese. we all know about the warring states and three kingdoms period...those guys were super advanced by then. full feudal system. all sorts of weapons and seige weapons. large navy. huge palaces. the whole bit. and that was around year 200ad. that's my gauge for realism.

for god's sake, i might still be trying to discovery construction by 200ad!

and i have never ever seen special units other than the hoplite cuz it's free from the start.

don't get me wrong. i absolutely love this game. i just need somebody to tweak my approach.

what difficulty are you on?

Btw: despotism is VERY bad you need to get out of it ASAP. Try Monarchy if you're unstable or republic if you are stable (I'm guessing you're not....so go for Monarchy) this should help get you in a position for republic. 200 AD and construction isn't bad for the first or second game....you'll improve. It's all new.

That was the goal for Civ 2...get to Monarchy early....some went for Republic too. I can't speak for Civ III as I don't have it yet...but will soon.

What difficulty are you on?

I know Monarch is a difficult level to play, so I would suggest you try Warlord or Regent, until you become more comfortable with the game. I would also suggest getting out of Despotism ASAP, by researching towards Monarchy or Republic. Another thing that you might want to consider is trading. Trade is so much more a part of Civ III than Civ II that you literally can't get by without making friends (and breaking a few friendships). Also, one of the programmers on the project, advises to build roads as fast and as furiously as possible; it seriously bumps up your science rate. Keep in mind as well that the more people who you know that already have the tech, the cheaper it is to research, so following in anothers' footsteps (like "drafting" in racing) can help you be pretty competitive even if you're behind the pack. Of course, this only works if you establish contact with other civs.
What victory conditions do you have selected? I have been able to reach Alpha Centauri well before 2050. Keep trying and you will get there! Hope this helps you out!
