Maximum science == extra money!
It's become clear that the maximum number of turns to research a technology is capped at 32. Thus, even if it would take you 75 turns to research, the cap sets it to 32. As a result, it often doesn't help to have more science beakers. If the additional science beakers don't reduce the cost to less than 32 turns, they provide no benefit.

So, I've come up with a new tactic for the early game. When researching technologies that are listed as 32 turns, I play with the science slider. I can usually reduce it to 20% or 30% science without affecting the number of turns. And, since I can't spend gold on rush building, I end up with a huge treasury -- and I'm still working at my maximum science rate! That huge treasury comes in quite handy when I meet other nations - I've been able to buy many technologies from my neighbors.

yup, for the fixed rate techs just drop your science rate and build up the treasury
