Give the game a chance: Its not civ 2.5
I've seen enough comments now to conclude this game is not civ 2.5 so the strategies that work in civ 2 are going to work here. Its also clear that the game is more difficult than civ 2 because the AI has been enhanced. The interface has changed and that has unsettled people.

So we should give the game a chance. It will take some time for players to master the game. Then we can make a balanced assessment.

In the meantime, chill

wth are you talking about?? its been out a day, thats plenty of time to play 55 games on diety level, win 54 of them, fully explore all possible strategic and tactical options the game presents, discover all of the bugs, and write a list of suggestions for civ 4

sheesh. some people.

After what I have read it has been made difficult by giving the AI advantages in production and combat strength. That's not what I call an enhanced AI.

Sounds like the Ai is more like civ I - better at attack.

Horse - the point is that the AI in WarCraft 2 is not necessarily good, but it has an advantage to the human player since it is contantly building things, so it is starting off better than the human player, who has to clikc on items for building

13 year old school boy - yes, I do play Civ2. and I was reffering to AH's points. I don't need to play Civ3 toexamine his statements, eh?

Someone from Firaxis posted in another thread and confirmed that the AI is the same in every single level. We've seen that it does a great job at waging war strategically, cutting your trade networks, attacking where it knows it can win, hit and run attacking, etc. What CHANGES from level to level is the "cheating variable" which gives a bonus for production and science to either the human or AI player. At Chieftain and Warlord, the human player gets an advantage. At Prince, everything is on equal footing (no one "cheats.") At Monarch, Emperor and Deity, the AI Civs get increasingly higher bonuses.

See New Thread AI and Difficulty Levels.

I put what was in the Strategy Guide about the AI and difficulty level hadicaps.

Dunno' how close it is to what they acutally put in the final relase.

Been playing at Regent hoping that the AI gets no cheats.

I'd like to see an Ai that was actually challenging - the ai in civ 1 was better than civ 2.

Finally a voice of reason, however horsy.

Example of improved AI:
I was defending a border line against the persians. I had infantry, etc. lined up, and the AI ALWAYS poked at the weakest link. When they broke through they sent cavalry all through my territory stealing workers, pillaging, and beating me up. I had to smile.

I think the AI does cheat in combat even on Chieftain. My units lose at an advantage (And yes, I check every variable) often enough that it can't be a case of bad luck.

Especially when it comes to cities. I've noticed the AI can use relatively weak units to overpower defending units with great ease. Conversely, it takes a great effort with swarms of units to oust the AI units from their seemingly unfortified positions inside their domain.

Or maybe it just has something to do with the loss of Firepower, I don't know. But something's not right.

Coupled with the better AI this makes for a merciless opponent - even when you don't want one.

Woe to the newcomer..

To hell with the AI, who gives a crap. It's not the AI that beats you it's the horribly pathetic combat system.

Whatever it is I want it fixed, because the combat is seriously trying my patience.
