Cut them off at the pass!
I read in the manual something I had'nt realized before. In CIV3 enemy forces cannot use your roads/railroads. They move at the unimproved rate for the terrain.
So when the AI Germans attacked me recently, they sent a large force into a valley surrounded by mountains inside my territory. I waited until they were well inside my borders, then sent cavalry around behind them. The artillery in my cities weakened them as they moved into range.
As the weakened units attempted to limp back into their own territory, my cavalry killed them all. They were trapped, and could not escape.
Its an old strategy that works even better now.
