Is air superiority worthless?
I had about 10 fighters and jet fighters running air superiority for a city of mine. The Germans bombed the city for many turns with no problems. Where are my damn fighters!
When I was bombing their cities, they were successful in shooting down some of my bombers with air superiority. Was I just very unlucky or what?

I am making a guess, but I think the odds of interception is 50%.
In the editor there is an option for 'air interception'. There are two slots: one for intercepting air, and one for intercepting stealth air. They are set by default at 50% and 5%.

Your planes were probably intercepted by Longbowmen. No, really, I mean it.

Were the bombers that were hitting you stealth bombers? If so, that would explain it, since you have only a 5% chance of intercepting a stealth bomber. If it was a regular bomber, you just got really unlucky. I've never had it happen that badly to me before. I think its more of an isolated incident. Don't let one event make you overly wary of the game.

Well, I don't know what the heck is going on with A.S.. I set the interception percentage to 100% and didn't see any of my Jet Fighters taking down the regular Bombers coming at me.
It could be broken.

Have your SAM batteries been succesful shooting down enemy planes? I have SAM defences in all my cities and high tech defences.. mech inf.. and i have radar artillery units, jet fighters with air superiority missions etc placed on nearly every city.. but still i get bombed by waves and waves of those older ww2 bombers and my defences wont do anything to stop them.. huoh.

Speaking of the mysterious AI combat bonus, I've seen it happen with my own eyes.
A knight fights a spearman, knight has upper hand, but for some reason, spearman's hp losses suddenly slows down to a crawl and the knight is slaughtered. The next turn, another veteran knight comes by and whacks the same until with no problem.
I really love Civ 3, i want to like it, and I do... but this and the corruption problem (see my thread-- Casual Civ Fan goes insanse from Corruption!) is aggrevating.
Yes, computer can cheat. give them sight of the whole map, but these combat bonuses the corruption thing needs to be fixed.
I think Firaxis needs to realize a computer is a computer is a computer. And the game's AI may play intelligently, but it doest mean it plays like a human, and that's the problem. Human players pull back when they see massive corruption in their cities, they get worried. They stop building cities. Whereas computer AIs blast right through it, and rack up culture and power points even if those cities are totally worthless. Not to mention all the problems with rival civs not honoring borders and waltzing right past our borders.

This was moved to the Strategy forum, but it should really be in the Help forum, as we are talking about a possible bug concerning Air Superiority, not about applicable strategies.

I don't see this as evidence of AI combat bonuses. The problem is that combat resembles that of Civ1 more than Civ2; however, this isn't even an instance of that. A fortified spearman has a pretty decent chance of beating a knight (3.3 to 4); even unfortified, it's chances aren't all that bad (2.2 to 4).

I've never seen this happen to any large extent. I had a group of 3 infantry and an artillery piece next to an enemy city (with 2 ironclads providing shore bombardment), and I must have heavily wounded 10 cavalry as well as killing an enemy army of cavalry and riflemen, while losing 1 infantry and wounding the others (and giving them experience enough to get my first great leader - strange to see George Washington leading an army of WW1 infantrymen)
Edit: Note that my infantry were defending the entire time

Appears to be a bug. Human player fighters don't fly air superiority and human player coastal fortresses don't fire on passing enemy ships. These "respond to the other player's movement" functions work fine for the AI.

I've encountered it once (due to my lack of wars) and the damn fighter shot down my bomber. So it seems to work for the AI at least.
