Has everyone noticed that one cannot select which terrain improvement to pillage during a turn... and also that
every improvement within the square is pillaged atonce? I think this could be key for absolutely ravaging an enemy economy. Not only disconnecting trade routes via roads such that unit building is hindered, but add to that mine or irrigation loss at the same time... So far, i haven't needed to do any raids like that, because I have been able to beat the AI's in the field quite handly. But I imagine that mass pillaging raids isn't a thing the AI will try on the human...
