If I had actually paid for it, Civ2. But my own purchase, it would definitely be Europa Universalis. The only game (at least until EU2 comes out) that can challenge Civ2 as the best PC strategy game ever. IMO of course.

The best game I purchased: Master of Orion 2
The best game I played: Civ1
best = liked it most when it was up to date. Of course Civ2 is better that Civ1.

Best: Moo2.
I don't even want to think about the time I spent playing those. Moo2 is still on the computer and I still play it even after 6(?) years after I got it.

Hm, of which Omega were you thinking? There's a "tank simulator" which was a take-off of Core Wars in which you program this tank/robot. There's another Omega that's based on rogue.
Maybe there are other ones of which I have no idea.

They are releasing EU 2 already? Feels like EU was released 6 months ago... Gotta milk the cow before it's too late, I guess.
As for the question of this thread: Civ 2!
On the other hand, if I count all the hours I've spent on this baby; all the fights with my ex girlfriend due to me being glued in front of the computer; the months (years? ) it has delayed my Ph D thesis, all the parties with my best friends I have turned down because I was "sick" (heh, heh, heh!) etc etc, then I would say it's the worst computer game I ever purchased!

That would be Starcraft, a great game that notches above the others because of the great multiplayer option.

The NA version, yeah. It was first released in Europa over a year ago.
And EU II is showing to be very good so far, so I'm not complaining.

Two Equally the Best, but for differing reasons.
1. Civ2 & MGE I've played for hours, even leaving games on hold while I was at work so I wouldn't have to load up again when I got back. Also crashed out after long sessions with the CD music still going since I like the music so much.
2. Harpoon2 Deluxe and Admiral's Edition. I've even done some scenario design work in this one. Play time is on a temporary hold because I did a hardware update and don't have the proper DOS drivers available.

Boulder Dash I, II - old C64 game.
Colonization - a supreme game, spent countless hours playing.
MoO2 - still play this game today.
SMAC - enjoyed this game far more than Civ or Civ 2. Received about a years worth of game play from this game, but it is now tedious.

Yeah, they were great If I had bought them they might have been on the list too. Actually the Boulder Dash games they had for the Amiga where much better than the C64 Boulder Dash games.
Civ3 will defently be number one the day I get the game (to Christmas I hope, otherwise 2 days later), but for now it will be The Settlers II who get's the number one spot. Civ1 was better than Civ2 and The Settlers II, but I didn't buy that one, but Civ2 was bought

In no particular order:
- Civ 2. (Need I say more? )
- Diablo I (was lucky enough to find it for $10)
- SimCity 2000 (I've spent many an hour I should have spent on homework with this game...)
- Doom
- Caesar III

Civ2, without a doubt (Civ 1 is disqualified since it was given to me).
Runners-up would be Homeworld, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Fallout 1 & 2.

I have HW and Cataclysm. The only problem is, that I have not been able to play the first through at all
Thus, I really can't think of it as a good purchase, though the game kicks Taiidan ass.
Not to mention your other favorites. I must say, you have very good taste

That classic pack is worth twenty times its weight in gold.
RR Tycoon: Fantastic game that my father is still hooked on to this day. He refuses to play anything else. (And its been over decade now I think?)
Civilization: The original and still one of the best.
Pirates Gold: This game was so much fun!
Colonization: Simply the best computer game ever made IMO. I would kill to see a sequel to, or even modernized version of, this game.

Sim City 2000 will probably have to take the top of the list.
After that, here' some others in other categories:
Outpost 2 (Real Time Strategy)
Civ 2 (Turn Based Strategy)
Ascendancy (Space Empire game - I consider Space Empire games whether TBS or RTS to be a seprate genre)
MYST
Mankind (Massively Multiplayer Space Empire game - only played the demo, but great nonetheless)

Well, this proves that there's no accounting for taste. Most people who have played Outpost 2 or Ascendancy (including myself) would have them on their all-time worst list.

Civ 1 !
It hooked me on the genre forever. Unfortunately IMO nobody's improved much on its defects since

Ignoring civ2...
1:Ceasar 3 £10
2:Half-life £10 (got it today scared s**tless after first 4 hours of play )
3:Midtown Madness (1+) £20 each.
4:USAF £10
5:Civ 3 £35 ( already gotten 100+ hours of gameplay out of it )
These are the games I've bought I've gotten a lot of free games from various friends with ISDN and CD-RW

3) UFO: Freedom Ridge (yes, it is revived, XCOM: Dreamland Chronicles Freedom Ridge, by Altar and Virgin (Oh, game that have been played, alright, XCOM: UFO Defense and Apocalyse).
4) Who can forget Pirates (and it also should be upgraded and expanded by "Sid").
5)RR Tycoon (got a card up your sleeve --- an Ace!)
Link to revived XCOM game at gamespot:

6) Oh Imperium Galactica II (probably III, updates, updates, updates (well, something different for me a a computer game).
Anything missing?

We are going to go all over the board now....
The one(s) i like the most are:
X-Wing Series (Tie Fighter etc.)
Civ2
The Operational Art of War Series
Jedi Knight
No one particular favorite as they are all different genres.

What's been on my HD for a long time and still gets played (always the best test):
Civ2 & SMAC - 'nuff said
Conquest of the New World - excellent maps & combat module
Pirates - a classic, I've played this a thousand times. At least. WE NEED A SEQUEL.
Emperor of the Fading Suns - not great out of the box, but some usermods have made this fantastic. Civ on 50 different maps at once and outer space, too.
Hollywood Mogul - stay away from the underwater films with egoist stars and two-bit producers, but animation in time for Christmas is a winner.
Colonization - worth it just for the Indian AI alone.
Advanced Civilizations - an old Avalon Hill game.
RxR Tycoon - liked the sequel but not as much as the original.
King of Dragon Pass - not as old, not as flashy, but a blast.
Age of Wonders - also not as old, but if they only had a random map generator I'd never play anything else.
---And what I think is the best TBS game ever made: Heroes of Might and Magic series. HoMM3 had the best scenario editor I've ever seen.
Not dogs, but not on this list:
MoO2 - don't make me click on those little citizens again, please?
Caesar, Sim City, Tropico and most building games - zzzzzz

Best in goodness/price
Civilization 2 - $30.00
Railroad Tycoon 2 - $20.00
Sid Meier's Gettysburg - $2.50
Civ2 and RRT2 are so much better than any game I've ever played. Gettysburg, well, that was a great purchase, but not comparable in goodness to the other two.

Best purchase in terms of most hours played: Daggerfall.
Best purchase in terms of mindless enjoyment: Half-Life.
Best purchase in terms of laugh-out loud funniness: Fallout II.

My Top 10
1 Civilization II Multiplayer
2 Age of Kings&The Conquerors
3 Master of Orion II
4 Alpha Centauri&Alien Crossfire
5 Red Alert 2
6 Diablo II Battlechest
7 Fallout series
8 Starcraft Battlechest
9 The Sims series
10 Civilization III
though Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete and Europa Univeralis 1 may well likely displace some of those soon as soon as I play them more...
I have seen Emperor of the Fading Suns now several times on this list. I have the game too, but what am I missing as I found the AI to be completely horrible because they didn't do anything! Also the aliens were incredibly powerful and artillery was the only useful unit. Are the player mods that good? Because aside from those problems, the concept was interesting with dozens of small civ maps in a game as well as space.

The only purchase I ever made was CTP2. So it was the best. And the worst.
Unless spending 0.5$ on a CDR counts as a purchase.
