Resources: A cause of war?
... or a lack of resources in Civ III often leads into war. I'm not saying that a lack of certain key resources like iron (crucial mid-early on!) is a bad thing but it adds flavor to Civ III since certain units require it for production.

Many times already I've played and found myself having no access to iron. Imagine the Romans without Legions because of no iron! Having key resources puts you at an advantage militarily and commercially. This is of course in sharp contrast for the "have nots."

I've found myself getting caught up in a war for land rich in certain resources like iron. Controlling this land instead of your rivals gives you alot of leverage. Of course, they could be getting ready to take it by force any time soon...

Love this game!

Speaking of which I am about to go to war with the chinese in 1600 AD because they have TONS of coal and I have not one resource in my empire. I am researching like mad to get to replaceable parts so i can build infantry then they are toast.

I just got nationalism and made some convenient mutual defense pacts with Indians and French too.

But if it turns out I don;t have rubber either I am in a world of hurt!! mwahahaaaaa!!

It's WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, get this--

I had just defeated a rival civ (actually, he was an ally on his last leg with only two cities left) so that I could get the uranium that was in his territory.

As soon as I succeeded, I made my first tactical nuke and used it. This caused another civ to go to war with me, and you know what the first thing they did was? They took out my uranium colony and my surrounding cities!

I don't know if the AI just knew it had to get rid of my uranium colony, or if those cities were just close enough to get attacked; but sure enough, I ended up being at a disadvantage without that uranium.

yeah, the ai can be a real pain in the butt some times. they have been known to pillage random squares in my empire while i roam through theirs. they always know where to hit and with what. and if their initial tactic doesn't work, they try a different approach. quite the nuisance.
