Specialist citizens are USELESS!!!
While attempting an OCC I noticed that specialist citizens (scientists, tax collectors) do not generate ANY extra science or taxes for the city!!! Entertainers work, though.

Unless I'm missing something, this is a serious bug. This essentially makes city populations above 20 useless! Firaxis, what's up with this?

Hmm. I noticed this as well but always assumed it is happening in the back end and never paid much attention. I remember in Civ2, whenever you change to a specialist, your city's earnings will change in real time to reflect the change.

I was turning a few of my jesters to taxmen the other day and i noticed my gold income did not increase as i was switching. but like i said, i assumed it was being done in the back end.

Anyone with a good handle on what's happening?

The taxmen do not add to city income, rather there is a specific slot on your F1 screen for them... not sure about scientists.

if you actually go to your domestic advisor screen and note your income, then goto the city and appoint a collector or gearhead, then return, you'll notice the income or science output has increased by the number of citizens converted. But it is rather pathetic that they bring in only one $ or one Sci per citizen no matter the city's commerce capability. I hope this is a bug of both display and game machenics, because if not, they really are useless.
