STORY Of The WEEK?
Anyone interested in running a "story of the week" contest?
I'm open to suggestions on rules and regulations

I think that's a cool idea.
The organiser could shortlist ten stories a week and then post a poll between them, and the winner of the poll would be the winner of the week - That's my suggestion anyway.
I could do something like that if no-one else comes forward, but I'm sure there would be someone more established or with a better idea.

Yeah but then we have to assume there's 10 good stories each week.

If there isn't, just shortlist less, that's no problem.

Nice idea,
The situation with numbers will improve when the rest of the world get civ3. I shall contribute something when it arrives here...
How about running a weekly poll, listing all the stories from that week, rather than ten, just like Rhysie said. Then make it a news item link, to get people interested, then hopefully it should snowball from there...
Some recognition of the Jornal of a civ3 Succesion game on the main board might get more people interested, along with a link to stories forum from the civ3 news page.

I only said ten because I thought that was the limit to the number of options in a poll, I just checked and found it's actually 16
So I'd revise my suggestion to up to 16 of the best stories. The only reason I put a limit on my suggestion was the poll limit - If it tried to include all stories posted in that week, then it would quite easily reach the point where a standard poll wouldn't be able to cope.

yes, i would find it pain to look at 59 different stories rather than look at the best 16. also, i would like to see lots of journals

My idea?!?
Mark,
I sent you an e-mail last week telling you about my plan to organise a story of the week contest. Why did you ask people on this forum if anyone was interested in running it? Did my e-mail arrive late or something?
Anyway, I'm talking to the other two people helping me with the contest and by tomorrow I will post the guidelines for the contest.

He may have had the idea independtly to you before your email - I work as an administrator for an online community, and the number of times people suggest things to me I have in the pipeline or claim responsibility for my ideas after I make them public is amazing.
Otherwise, he may have not liked your idea for the format of the thing, or wanted debate over the format in order to ensure the contest proceeded in the most popular style - So far this thread has indicated a preference for voting, whereas your idea is for a panel of judges, a style not suggested independtly, indicating it isn't a popular idea.
I can see a number of problems with a panel of judges over a popular vote:
1) A panel is not representative of the community,
2) People would be more pleased with the recognition of their work by the community than by three individuals,
3) A panel declaring the winner each week does not create the easily accessable repositary of good stories each week that a shortlist for an open vote creates,
4) Yin 'judging' stories would actually put me off posting any I write, in the fear that he would rip them to shreds if he found the slightest thing wrong with them.

well you didnt respond quickly enough to my response and i decided to post about it and see what people would be interested
and yes, as i wrote to you in my response i would prefer to see it run with recommendations from the people for a week, then a vote on the top 5 for the next week. or something like that
