A test of Willpower
Ok, I've decided what I'm going to do. The game is released on Friday here in the UK - - and my birthday is on Saturday. So, as a test of willpower, I'm going to buy the game on Friday, and sit it on my shelf, unplayed, until Saturday. Do you reckon I can do that?

If I get serious longings, I'll just satisfy myself with reading the manual.

I'm also making this a poll, just 'cos I've never done one before.

Tell ya what, Chowlett. It's the game, and not the trimmings, that is the real reward for your birthday. I think spending birthday-eve reading the manual is a fantastic idea. Just think of the wonderful anticipation, trying to get to sleep, and then awakening early that next morning, bleary-eyed but blissful as you open that CD. It's like a birthday and early Christmas all rolled into one.

Later, you'll be proud that you held to your honor. And that alone will make your gaming experience even greater. Enjoy.

The option is always implied in one of these polls, because you can always choose not to vote

I gave you no. Your birthday is on Saturday, so the box should stay closed until Saturday. No opening the package before your birthday.

If you open the box on Friday, you have already lost. Now, there's a challenge!

The vote stands at 2:2:10. Thanks for the vote of confidence guys

Personally I reckon I can get away with just the manual, and I think I can manage the whole box, but we'll have to see.

As a fellow Brit I shall be getting my copy on Saturday. It would be Friday but my boss and I have a difference of opinion over priorities.

I vote that you will be unable to resist. Your mind is weak and the force is strong with Civ.

Well, I have it!

It's sitting on my shelf, excitingly shrinkwrapped, but I haven't opened it. And I'm not going to!

Or am I? Place your bets!

Do not open the box ever thats the only way to keep the game good.

When I got information that civ3 is coming in one week I was f***in exited. I went to civ3.com, read all "civ of the weeks" and all units here on apolyton. When I got the game in my hands and played it with great pleasure for about two days after I realized that this game is nothing compared to civ2. As I know the civ team is different no more microprose to make the game the whole game is only a mass selling product with cool looking graphics like command&conquer.
I am not complaying but saying that I am very disappointed, maybe patch will make it better but I doubt it. SO dont just open the box and you will enjoy the game more than playing it.

Chowlette, if you have the game in your possession, are reading the manual, and expecting to sleep more than five or six hours that night, you're sorely mistaken.

Well, the cellophane came off at 9:15 this morning, or thereabouts. Unfortunately, due to lectures I couldn't play until this afternoon, but I had a go at about 2-ish. I've only just stopped, and that's 'cos I need to do some real work.

Playing as Greeks on Warlord, all settings default. Just made it into the Mediaeval era (in 1080AD - is this good, bad or inifferent?), and it's good so far! I've met the romans, who are to my south across a narrow isthmus - they block my only source of iron (I posess only horses and about 5 gems ), so I'm going to have to try to assimilate them (too powerful for war); and the Aztecs, who are on another continent nearby. They've just thrown a size 1 city onto my land, near some well established cities of my own, so that one's not going to last! Haven't met anyone else yet, but they've been active! I've managed to build only the Pyramids, while others have got Collosus, Gardens, Lighthouse, Library, War Acadamy and Oracle! Yikes! This is quite humbling...
