FIRAXIS: United Nations, little fix please.
Who genious made Civ3 to ask every turn if you want to hold UN voting if you built it? It's pretty damn irritating if you don't want to hold them..
Here's my suggestion:
When you build UN in the main screen will appear a small icon, like if you build Secret Service, or like in your capital. When you double-click it, it'll ask if you want to hold UN voting. Quite simple?

I thought it was every 20 turns.
Why can't it be triggered by players (AI and Humans) like in SMAC? And why is Win-The-Game the only thing you can do with it? And where are the player portraits?
Can we not have the UN feel a bit like the Planetary Council? That was sooooo much fum.

Yes, I'd like that too. It'd add more to do in the modern age.

As far as I can work out, the OPPORTUNITY comes up every 20 turns, but if yu click No, it will ask you again next turn, and next turn, and next turn... until you click Yes. Then it will wait another 20 turns. Or possibly until 20 turns after the first time of asking in a row, I don't know.

Expanded UN would be incredible, maybe for the Gold edition... Like planetary council in SMAC with real world options instead.
Things like imposing UN trade sanctions, UN authorized war (with all members but victim striking), climate/polution requirements being voted on that automatically apply sanctions to those who violate a certain pollution level, etc.
This bare bones vote, "you win the game" is like a 1975 mainframe game.

yeah, i'm surprised they didn't make it like planetary council. being secretarty general should be like planetary governer (trade bonuses, veto) and make the diplomatic victory they have now more like the supreme leader of smac
and all that other cool stuff like sanctions and wars.

Excuse me if I'm trolling, but finding that this thread had dropped to page3 I wanted to get it up so that it would get some attention. This is a matter that needs to be looked into IMHO, and I hate the fact that the "We-Hate-Civ3" faction has taken over the forum and pushed genuine points down.
The UN is a great idea. It really made SMAC for me and I would be very disappointed if a menu to win was all it is going to be about in Civ3. The potential is there, it's up to Firaxis to use the opportunity.

Also another idea:
With the creation of the UN, all border incursions by military units will not be allowed anymore except if you have a formal agreement with the other civ allowing you to cross his land.
If those military units are yours then you will be prompted either:
a) To declare war and face usual consequences.
b) Not declaring war but other civs' opinions toward you will be much reduced. Even there's a small chance that UN want to pull out a Resolution to team-tackle you (except your civ is one of the bigger fish or you have lots of friends to veto out the Resolution).
Submarines and other hypotetical stealth units (Special Forces, Spy Plane - oh I wish Civ III had these, it will be so much better) will be immune to those above unless "discovered".
I think this mirror the world we're living now.
